Mirena coil

1000 replies

Lizzer · 07/01/2002 12:41

Hi all, after my treatment (see smear tests) I am wanting to have the Mirena coil fitted. I've read the blurb but don't actually know anyone who has one. Really I'm interested more in the fact that it often changes / stops periods because of the small amount of progesterone in it, and was wondering how this affected people. Also I was told there is a lot of breakthrough bleeding when first inserted? I was under the impression that you can't feel it at all, but wondering if that's true? I've never had a coil fitted before so hope it is the right decision for me. My GP told me it was as affective a contraception method as man having a vascetomy!! Which sounds great for me at the moment... Any comments welcome.

I think the correct term for trying to find your Mirena threads is "furtle" actually, and furtling is always best done after a glass of wine, in said warm bath.

whooOOOoooOOOpsfallenoveragain · 22/10/2006 15:37

sorry but pmsl at you two!
I also have missing threads so not quite sure what will happen tomorrow! The doctor did mention them using some kind of brush

2ndtime · 22/10/2006 15:39

Bloody hell Whooooops! Wonder if it will be like one of these chimney sweep things?

whooOOOoooOOOpsfallenoveragain · 22/10/2006 15:41

what are you saying

I bloody hope not! Although I think the nurse used one to locate them the last time they went missing at my smear and it wasn't too bad even though she didn't find them! luckily the doctor did that time!

bobobobs · 22/10/2006 15:44

furtling with a chimney sweeps brush? they do do things strangely in your neck of the woods!

2ndtime · 22/10/2006 15:46

Sorry Whooooops. Didn't mean to offend. Just getting a bit giddy coz I found my little sister in here.
I meant a barbies hair brush obviously.

bobobobs · 22/10/2006 15:47

pmsl too! awww sis, i've missed you!!

2ndtime · 22/10/2006 15:55

You too Bob. xx
Whatever they use whoops, I'm sure you'll be fine.
Did they advise you to take any painkillers before hand? I would have a couple half an hour before, just in case. Not that it hurt when mine came out, but if they have difficulty finding it it might be a bit uncomfortable.
Let us know how you get on.xx

bobobobs · 22/10/2006 15:58

right been on here too long, got to go and play with my gerbils.

(and no, that is not another euphemism for rootling, furtling, or scoorying, rude laydeez!!)

whooOOOoooOOOpsfallenoveragain · 22/10/2006 16:03

I knew what you meant!

I was going to take painkillers before anyway just in case! I wish someone had suggested it before I had the thing put in though!

Will report back tomorrow night!

bobobobs · 22/10/2006 16:07

good luck, whooops, let us know how you get on

lapsedrunner · 22/10/2006 19:58

Just want to say my experince is positive, positive,positive....had mine fitted in Feb 06 and things get better each month. i.e. tiny periods, no worry about contraception etc. As for weight gain, I can honestly say no, I have been trying to lose 7 kilos for ages but then I am 44 and I do enjoy wine = weight remains the same. Sore boobs = yes, but small price to pay. Overall I think it's great (by the way I never had problems when on the pill, re hormones etc).

2ndtime · 22/10/2006 20:12

I'm very glad for you lapsedrunner and hope that remains the case.xx

expatinscotland · 22/10/2006 20:15

They really try to sell the Mirena here.

I am so glad I decided to try the POP first, b/c I found out the hard way that progesten-based contraception is not for me.

2ndtime · 22/10/2006 20:18

I know they say they don't get commission, but they must do. Why the hell else would they want to stick these things in us?

expatinscotland · 22/10/2006 20:20

Honestly, 2, I smelled a rat w/that. I'm from the States, where it's known that doctors get kick backs from drug companies for prescribing certain medications, so believe me, my eyebrows went up.

whooOOOoooOOOpsfallenoveragain · 22/10/2006 20:20

Expat - I was in scotland when I got mine. I was told it would be what my doctor would use if she was to have a more long term contraception nothing else was even suggested to me.
When I first had it I was fine but only in the last couple of months have I noticed a change.

expatinscotland · 22/10/2006 20:23

I was told the same thing, whoo.

When I brought up the possibility that you'd bleed for months, they said it would 'settle down' in 6 months or so.

I told them I found bleeding for 6 months a completely unacceptable side effect of contraception, b/c for me it would defeat the purpose of having it.

As it is, the POP made me bleed pretty much constantly.

Also, my skin gets REALLY bad on progesten.

And then there's my PND . . .

Progesten also kills my libido, again, negating the need for contraception.

whooOOOoooOOOpsfallenoveragain · 22/10/2006 20:26

Expat I was told that my periods would lighten a lot or stop completely after 6 months - it took almost a year!
I am sooo looking forward to it coming out tomorrow and a plus side is that dh has agreed to me nt having any conraception now so if another whoops comes along we'll be happy! (but we aren't going to be activly trying I have been told!!)

2ndtime · 22/10/2006 20:28

I would like to know if anyone with a mirena actually has a sex drive? Seems to be the most common side effect (along with the weight gain, hair loss, depression blah, blah, blah, blah}.

2ndtime · 22/10/2006 20:29

Sounds like the pitter patter of tiny whoooopses any time soon then!

Reece · 22/10/2006 21:34

I have just caught up on this thread and tbh yes, it must have affected my sex drive as I hardly ever think about sex any more. I can pretty much take it or leave it whereas I was happily active before Mirena came and invaded! DH always seems to initiate sex now. That didn't used to be the case. I honestly put all this down to the fact that I am knackered looking after 2 under 3!

Ronniebaby · 22/10/2006 22:55

I'd like to know if anyone who has had the Mirena removed etc has got back their sex drive and if so after how long. I have had mine removed about 3 weeks now and mine hasn't come back yet

2ndtime · 23/10/2006 15:35

Mine came back in a very short time. 2 weeks or there abouts. I have read that it takes 60 days for all the hormones to leave your system, so stick with it. Have you sorted alternative contraception? That could be a passion killer if not!

whooOOOoooOOOpsfallenoveragain · 23/10/2006 15:51

Am getting really nervous about tonight now!
When did your periods return? and did you bleed straight after having it removed?
