Heavy periods with spotting in between - ultrasound ok so what will D&C look for

I've had heavy periods for the last couple of years and recently they've become more irregular with spotting in between. I'm 41 so GP said too young to assume menopause so sent me for an ultrasound which looked ok. I'm going to have a D&C next week which I presume is to check for cancerous or precancerous cells in the uterus and at the same time I'm having endometrial ablation. TBH I'm more worried about the spotting than the heavy periods. What would cause this? Are there any other tests I should be having or questions I should ask? Is spotting a sign of approaching menopause taken with these other symptoms? Just read about ovarian cancer so now worried about this too! Ovaries looked ok on ultrasound so does that mean they are ok? Thanks

Hi am going through exactly the same myself but I don't understand how your doc has dismissed menopause without doing blood tests?

I don't know but will watch with interest. I am in the same boat but just thought it was one of those things...

Isn't a D&C to scrape away the build up in your womb? that often helps with heavy periods. No expert though.

Thanks for the replies. Since GP referred me to hosp gynae for scan I think she thought everything would be dealt with there. I don't think she did dismiss menopause but simply thought that you couldn't assume it was that until a few other things had been ruled out. I thought that blood tests were inconclusive to check hormone levels since they change from day to day and if cycle is irregular it might be even harder to interpret (not sure who told me that - might have been consultant) but will ask at hosp when I go for D&C. I'm glad to have had the ultrasound though as I did wonder about ovarian cyst but none showed up. The doctor doing the scan said it would be very very surprising to have uterine cancer without being overweight and post-menopause - hope he's right! I wouldn't be upset if it is the menopause - I just want to be sure there's nothing more serious wrong that I should be doing something about.

I had a blood test to determine my place iyswim? I'm confirmed as being peri menopausal sadly.
