Anyone any experience of going deaf in one ear?

I just wondered if this had happened to anyone else.

DP lost all hearing in one ear a couple of weeks ago. He went to the docs, was send to ENT, given antivirals and steroids and told it was probably an infection. No improvement. MRI is in a week or so. he has been back to the consultant and he says now that it is probably a fistula, and he will have to have an op within a month if that's what the MRI shows. We have just had to cancel our wedding which was supposed to be in 3 weeks.

He is suffering a lot in any kind of noisy situation, and a bit irascible. He says he has a sort of rushing noise in his head.

I suppose I'm wondering if this gets any better, and if anyone has had this op (I read up about it and it seems to only help a small percentage, and them only a little bit).

Yes , me. It happened when I was 25. I was initially retreated for glue ear, had ABS, then eventually referred for scan etc. MRI came up with nothing, wires on my head likewise and nothing untoward to be seen in there. I too get the rushing noise, worse when I'm stressed. Loud environments are hard work, but now have had it for 13 years and pretty much used to it. Have learned to mention it to people if I think it might be a problem, and put myself in the right place to hear.

Sorry, this probably doesn't help, but maybe good to hear that life not majorly affected by it.

Sorry, just read about fistula and op, haven't had that.

Thanks Olivo, it's really useful to know that you've learned to live with it. They don't know the reason for DP's hearing loss yet - fistula is just one of the possibilities.

i had this about 8 months ago now - initially put down to infection and then possibly glue ear however at my next appointment i had MRI and hearing tests it has been diagnosed that a virus has attacked the aural nerve on my right side. my hearing wont come back and although im getting used to it, i do still have trouble in load noisey place and if im having to concentrate on listening for any length of time. i should be getting a hearing aid soon to help a bit.
