DS's little friend may have mumps. They were playing together yesterday afternoon. DS hasn't had his MMR yet. Little friend has though.

I'm guessing I should keep him off nursery tommorrow. Anyone got any idea what we might be in for? or any precautions we should take?

TIA

He may not develop mumps until 3 weeks after he came into contact with an infectious person so there is no way of knowing until then whether he has caught it or not. If he has caught it he needs to be kept at home until he is out of pain and the swelling has subsided.

Cheers. So, do I keep him away from other children for 3 weeks (risking our sanity) Or carry on regardless? Doctor says the latter, but mainly wants to know why hasn't had the jabs - how very helpful.

Bloody gps! I don't know really , I'd carry on as normal the infectious period is usually 3 days before the swelling comes up and the earliest the swelling normally comes up is at around 14-21 days so I reckon your ok for a couple of weeks.

Ledodgy · 05/04/2006 18:15

should add they infectious period is around 7 days 3 days before the swelling and onwards from there!

Right, so carry on as normal. Have you had the mumps in your household Ledodgy? or anyone else?

I would definitely carry on as normal. If we kept them in everytime we thought they may have picked something up off someone who may have had something or other, we'd probably never go out! (it's not like you know his friend had mumps or that they were sharing cups etc.!).

We haven't had the actual disease but ds did get a 'mumps like illness' after he had the MMR - apparently, it was a reaction to the mumps element and he basically came out in mumps (but much milder).

Its looking likely that his friend (who was at our house for 3 hours and being very affectionate!) has got mumps - his genius of a dr says its either that or tonsilitis. But this little boy has had the MMR (more than 6 months ago), so who knows? I will speak to his mum again tomorrow for an update.
