I've just had a tooth out. Best £95 I've spent in ages.

It was fine. Just in case anyone has an extraction coming up and is dreading it. What a relief!

It could be me......waiting another couple of days to see if my tooth settles down (dentists words) if not it is coming out. At the moment I am glad that my DH doesnt have a tool box as I feel like I would do it myself as the pain is driving me gaga!!

Tell us more detail NiceBiscuits - which tooth ,how long was the appointment ,did you have to get really numb ,is it ok now ?

I've got myself in such a state about forthcoming dental work - partly because dentist can't tell until he's working on tooth what he's going to do ,RCT or extraction - so am looking for reassurance Smile

nightcat · 21/11/2012 21:26

yes, I think I might need one out too :(

NiceBiscuits · 21/11/2012 23:18

It was a bottom double tooth. It just took a few seconds and honestly it didn't hurt at all. I had been imagining all sorts of scenarios but it was just felt like a bit of wiggling from side to side and that was it. I couldn't believe how quick it was. The longest bit was waiting for the local to work, the dentist would prod around and I would say no actually I think I really do need more anaesthetic... That bit took ages. About 10 minutes probably. The extraction, 10 seconds.

Thanks NiceBiscuits .
That's kind of how I imagine it but good to have first hand confirmation .

It must be odd not knowing if it's going to be one procedure or another. My tooth was so knackered by the time I plucked up the courage to see the RCT guy he just took one look at it and said it had to come out.

My dentist has said that the tooth will have to come out as I dont open my mouth wide enough and he wont be able to do root canal. HATE my teeth!!!!

nicebiscuits I know what you mean, I was due to have a tooth out, found out I was expecting, dentist wanted to wait until baby arrived. The tooth gave me more grief than labour, honestly 9 months of pain. As soon as it was out it was fine and such a big relief, a week to heal and such a difference. Impacted upper wisdom tooth.

In fact 6 weeks later had the other one out at the teaching dental hospital by a dentist teaching three students. He took it out partially with them watching, they then each had a go at trying to remove it, the one that did the best job got to to finish the job. And even that didn't hurt, the LA was well done and numbed me probably longer than needed. Even recovery was the same. For all their fiddling.

The difference it's made to my oral hygiene is immense, I just couldn't get them clean and had bad breath and oddly, since then my recurrence of tonsilitus has almost disappeared.

I am a big wimp normally and was so amazed that the pain was so low. But then they have me a short supply of co-codamol. Still managed to BF dd happily.

NiceBiscuits - oh thanks for understanding . I didn't realise myself how this aspect was upsetting me until I got to dentists and was unable to sit in chair and made a right show of myself Blush Blush .
Think I'd been trying not to think about it !
But I think I've got my head round it now .

Bally - I know what you mean about hating one's teeth .
Plus I feel so guilty ,is it all my fault that my teeth are sooo crap ?
Poor you ,that's odd that you can't open your mouth wide enough . I wonder if the dentist did it under sedation if the muscles would be more relaxed and it could be done then ?

kellestar - thanks for very encouraging tale .
