I had a coil fitted about 5 weeks ago. Reason being that although I have been sterilised, my periods became so heavy that I couldn't leave the house for 5 days each month - more like haemorrhages than periods and after intitial 5 day flood would just linger on for another week or so. Iron levels down and general health and emotional well being suffered.

Had exploratory op and waiting for results ( they took away womb lining to check) but consultant said it is common for wombs in women over 40 who have had kids to start playing up and coil ( mirena ) is commonly fitted to solve the problme of excessive bleeding.

He said that it would take 3-6 months for situation to improve and bleeding to become normal and said that some women don't even get periods anymore after the coil.

Problem is i've been bleeding since operation 5 weeks ago on and off . Not heavy but bright red fresh blood each day varying in degree.

Its just getting me down as although he said 3-6 months to stabilise I didn't expect to be bleeding for 5 weeks at a time.

So if you have had a Mirena coil fitted please come and talk to me about your periods and wehther they are continuous spotting or heavy or light post coil.

I had the mirena fitted in March and bled, to varying degrees of heaviness (and colour!) until September. Since then, I think I've had a period - nothing that requires anything more than a pantyliner. Hang on in there x

I bled continuously for about 6 weeks, some days more than others, some days red and others awful icky black stuff.

It has sorted itself out now. Mine was fit in June. I have a bleed each month but it is very minimal.

I had the coil fit because of really heavy periods.

There are some tablets that you can get from the dr's which I had prescribed whilst waiting to have the coil fitted - trans something.... You take them at the start of your period for about 3 days - around 4 tablets a day, this reduces blood loss by bald or more.

It will settle down.

Thanks bellavita - i took those tablets too during the time I was bleeding v v heavily. It is not appropriate now though as bleeding not v heavy just incessant. .

Glad to know that it has sorted itself out now for both of you. Bella - were you sorted and back to light periods after 6 weeks then?

I had Mirena fitted earlier on this year, I had a slight bleed on the day (had non- Mirena coil removed and Mirena fitted) I had one light period after and nothing else since, they do warn you that things can take a while to settle down.

Yes, the blood loss has got less and less. I just wear a panty liner now - it is like a bit of brown dirty discharge I get for about 3 days once a month.

I am now on my seconda Mirena (8 yrs total) and have had a handful of light periods in that time. I had first one fitted not long after DS born and it took a few months to settle. But having suffered 7 day vv heavy periods prior to pregnancy it has been wonderful. Saved a fortune on t & ts.

Go for it! I was going to have mine removed at first with constant teaspoonful a day bleed for weeks after having it fitted but glad I didn't.

No more periods! I smile when I pass the sanitary products isle now.

I am on my 3rd Mirena now - 11th year! I haven't had any bleeding other than for a couple of days after original was fitted, then again for a couple of days after old one changed for new one.

I have been so happy with it, although I have read a lot of threads on here where it hasn't been a solution for people.

I had about 6 months of frequent bleeding and was beginning to get a bit fed up. But at 6 months it all stopped and I havent had a period since (its been years). Stick with it if you can, it should be worth it in the long run.

Yes I bled pretty much most of the time for the first few months. Then it virtually stopped completely. I started to feel some side effects and mine also got lost so I ended up having it taken out. But yes, if you hang in there, there's a good chance it will stop your periods pretty much altogether. I think I had mine put in the May and by September the periods had stopped.

Wow thanks for responses but what do you mean blanksquit that yours "got lost"? Where and how?

I think it's fairly unusual but sometimes they cannot be found on the check up (a month after it's put in) in that they can't locate the strings or visually see it. So i had to go for various scans and eventually have it removed under GA. They were quite happy to leave it there, but as I was using for contraception, I didn't see the point if I couldn't be sure it was in the right place or even there.

But I think if you're using it to reduce periods, it's probably very much worth persisting with it.

I have had the mirena for 18 months. It took a bit of persuading to have it and it was talking to work colleagues which persuaded me as they thought it was great. Well, it hasn't been so great for me. I had heavy painful periods including pain at ovulation. Since the mirena I would say I have had less pain and less heaviness but I have had increased length of time. A two week period is normal for me and just when I think it is finishing will start all over again! I've also got cysts and fibroids! I've just had a blood test to check my testosterone level, no results back yet. I am seriously thinking about having the mirena removed. It may have helped the heaviness but I have been left with a totally different set of problems!
