what happened.? Have you had the lurgy and has it left you deaf or am I being dim? I have a horrible prob with my left ear at the mo. I have glue ear anyway, but just had a cold and now I can hear my blood pumping in my ear! Does that make sense?

mabel1973 · 03/04/2006 15:49

Thank god it's not just me!!!!
I started a thread about this a couple of weeks ago.
I have been deaf in my left ear for 3 months now following a cold. I tried everything, olive oil, earex, steaming, holding my nose and blowing really hard, and finally out of desparation hopi ear candles. Nothings worked.
I went to the doctors last week and he said my ear canal was clear, so it must be my middle ear that was blocked. He could've prescibed me anti-histamines, which apparantly open up the middle ear, but I can't have them as I'm pregnant. So there's nothing he can do (apparantly)
My last hope is to go back to the doctors and get them to refer to me to an ENT speacialist
I have a constant fizzing in my ear and feels like I'm underwater :(

misdee - try all the things I've listed below also otex is meant to be good (I can't use it as it contains a decongestant and I'm pg).
Failing that go to the doctors - maybe they need syringing?

misdee · 03/04/2006 17:07

I was put on antibiotics as well - although they got rid of the pain and inflamation unfortunately they didn't clear my hearing - I hope yours do.

misdee · 05/04/2006 16:12

Misdee if it continues go back to your doctor. I have made an appointment to see mine for a 2nd opinion - I have been deaf now in my left ear, with a constant fizzing sound for three months!
I want them to refer me to an ear nose and throat specialist.

Hi mabel, I think I spoke to you about your hearing loss before. I'm sorry to hear that you haven't had your hearing come back. Please go and see the ENT specialist. They should do a hearing test and then at least you'll know at what level your hearing is at and what they can and can't do for you.

I lost my hearing in my right ear in November - just woke up one morning, very dizzy, and couldn't hear and had a loud ringing in my ear. It really hasn't improved much since then and I know what you guys are going through with the hearing loss. It's very awkward being in crowded places, or where the acoustic are good. Most of my friends know about my situation and don't mind if I ask them if I can sit in certain places to help with my hearing. It is a real pain. I was suppose to have an wick inserted in my middle ear to aid with steriod drops, but I am pregnant and can't do anything at the moment. From what I have read, the longer you wait to get it treated the chances of your hearing coming back decreases.

Where are you guys located? I saw a GREAT ENT specialist in London and I would highly recommend - and saw him on NHS!

noddyholder · 05/04/2006 19:31

I had this and 3 months on am still deaf!It clears at times and everything sounds really loud and then goes back to that underwater feeling again.Otex is meant to be good but not sure if you have an infection if you can use it

Coolmama · 06/04/2006 20:56

Oh - would love the name of the ENT guy - have the same problem with a blocked middle ear and have tried everything -

fatbetty · 06/04/2006 21:16

His name is Prof. Anthony Narula at the St. Mary's hospital in Paddington. I have to say that I was very impressed by him and he seemed very knowledgeable about this condition.

fatbetty · 06/04/2006 21:18

Very interested in how you all get on with this! When it happens you think that you're the only one but from people I've talked to since, somebody always knows of somebody who has experienced similar situation.

Coolmama · 06/04/2006 21:26

thank you very much!

misdee · 08/04/2006 23:37

my hearing hasnt returned yet. its quite scary at times as i cant hear where sounds are coming from. I am actually having to use the baby monitor to hear dd3 where as before i just left the bedroom doors open.

I really feel for you poor guys having again recently gone through this. It was only 10 days and I put it down to tonsillitis which I get constantly.

I waited until my inner ear was less sensitive and then put 5 drops of Otex in night and morning. When I have used Otex in the past, I could hear the fizzing, but this time, nothing - which was a bit scarey!

I really hope you all get your hearing back soon, it really is horrible to not have it - and weirdly enough, mine was my left ear too!

fatbetty · 09/04/2006 16:33

Sometimes I have a hard time telling where sound is coming from - especially if somebody is in another part of the house. I also find that I sleep on my bad ear so that I can listen out for the children during the night.

Cristina7 · 09/04/2006 16:54

"Sometimes I have a hard time telling where sound is coming from"

You need to hear with both ears to be able to localise sound - that small, very small difference in time between the sound reaching one ear and then the other gives you the sense of direction/place for the sound.
