I'm booked in to have implanon on friday and I know about all the usual side effects, headaches weight gain etc, pretty much the same as the pill.
But a bit unsure about irregular periods that you'd have. How irregular?

Please tell me what your experiences of the implant are

I had an implanon implant 6 months ago. DD was 3 months old and I was breastfeeding. So no period until she stopped breastfeeding, that was 3 months ago... and still no periodsGrin. I haven't had any side effects and it is wonderful to not have to remember to take the pill. It takes only about 5 secs to have the implant put in your upper arm. It is not painful only a little bit tight once your upper arm is waking up. I am so glad I had it doneSmile so I hope you will find it positive too... Let us know!

Hi Alicemama,
I had the implant in Nov 2004 and had very bad irregular periods , i would have a 3 day period, every other week , they then put me on the contraceptive pill to sought this out , but when i stopped taking the pill 3 months later it the problem period would come back. I was told by a friend of mine who is a contraception Nurse that people who tend to be over weight dont have problems and where i was crash dieting ( i was getting married the following year!) this may be why i had problems! After 6 months i couldn't stand it anymore and had i removed which was horrific as the nurse could get it out and i now have an inch scar on the inside of my arm which nearly after a year is still visible -
But on a positive side my friend has had it done and after 2 Months of irregular periods , is now normal and she has had it for 18 months and loves it! Good Luck :)

Hi stol, didn't really like the story of having your implanon taking outShock... Did you have to go to hospital to have it removed? It did sound awful... it is so easy to have it put in!
Do you think the nurse wasn't use to take the implanon out?

I have had one put in (and taken out!) and it was fine. If I'm honest it wasn't nice having it taken out (the doctor did it with a local anaesthetic) but I had it removed to conceive ds2 and am definitely having another one! Your scar sounds awful stol, mine is literally only a 0.5cm line now, right on the inside of my arm.

In answer to the original question I had spotting/irregular periods for a couple of months but then it settled down and I didn't have any until I had it removed.

The Nurse that put it in was the same one who took it out and i think that she put it in to deep as it hurt for days afterwards. When she took it out i was a the doctors and i was in the room for 45 Mins! After her failing they had to get one of the doctors in and she was pushing it up from the bottom and he was trying to grab it from the top!! - hence the scar being so long they had to make a longer cut so they could get a grip on it! I would never do it again but lots of peole have a good experince with it and the whole concept of not taking a pill and being proteced for 3 years is ideal!

thanks for your help girls. I've had no probs with the pill but wanted a long term solution as 2 kids is plenty for us.
I've forgotton to take it on hols before and as we're off to florida in 6 weeks I'm looking forward to no pills.

Thanks
