My baby aged 4.5 months has been diagnosed wiht refulx and is on medication ( ranitidrine and dom peridone). However the meds doen't seem to have helped at all ( he is on max dose for his age and weight) and the screaming episodes are getting worse and more prolonged.

I am going to get a consultant referral to an expert in this area and in the meantime wondered if any other mums had experience of this and could share advice, tips etc. I am thinking of changing his formula milk and wonder if anyone has done this succesfully for reflux?

Thganks for all replies

Hi girls,

I needed to vent my frustration out this morning and I thought where best my cyber comrades who have been going through this reflux also. My litte one I thought was getting out of the reflux but the last two days she has been a nightmare with crying all night and vomiting feeds again. I was hoping to get some kind of normality back but its looking bleak this morning. I have kept her home from creche this morning to keep an eye on her. My husband is off to the States on Sunday for a week and I am freaking out now as I do not have any help near me and I cannot take time off work as I only do 16 hours four mornings a week. I have the school run, the montessori run, try and do 4 hours work , collect all three again and still remain cherry amongst the reflux, the normal day to day things like feeding kids, doing homework, clean my face etc. and then hopefully get a few hours sleep. Sorry girls, but you know after 9 months of reflux it does take its toll on everyone. Anyone got any postive thoughts for me this morning!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi girls,

Just to update any of you still struggling with reflux. Our story has taken a differnt turn. Our little one was very sick last week and what I thought was reflux turned out to be a little more serious and as I was so distracted with the vomiting and reflux I was forgeting about all the chest infections she keeps having. Anyway to keep a long story short, we have to bring her to hospital in two weeks to get tested for cystic fibrosis. You see she keeps having chest infections and also the reflux of course isn;t helping with her thriving, but she is beginning to lose weight now so the doctor said we have to rule it in or out. Out I am hoping. I was so stressed over the weekend worrying about her that I just couldn;t concentrate on anything. Hopefully it won;t be that. But girls you know when people tell you they will grow out of it.. Trust your instincts if you are anyway concerned that its not stopping and get some answers to your worries.

Hope your all well.

My hubby stuck in the air somewhere between Boston and Dallas. I could do with him here this week!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, bit of a gate crash.

Mumofthree - try not to worry about the CF test too much - yes they have to rule it out but it's possible that she has a lot of chest infections because of the reflux. She may be aspirating a little into her lungs which would cause them - have the hospital considered that possibility?

My dd was due a CF test for her sickness/weight loss but she didn't have it, as they finally found the cause.

MUmofthree64baby - sorry to hear your litle one is not so good.

My ds is worse too unfortunately. AFter thinking we'd cracked it on rinitidine and dom peridon and enfamil milk he returned to "normal" a few days later and has gone rapidly downhill. He's now losing weight and refusing his feeds complteely - back in A&E yesterday night ashe'd only taken 3oz since the morning. Had a reveiw this am and doctor has decided to change rinitide for omeprozole and if that doesn't work to try nutramgian. If that doesn't work then he's going to be referred to Gt Ormond Street for tests.

Docs are worried as ds did one green vomit yesterday which apparantly is a bad sign. Sad

Hi Lisalisa,

What a nightmare, I understand completely where you are at. My little one has a bad chest infection this week and has been quite poorly and in and out of the doctors. She was put on antibiotics and steriods which sent her balistic. She is highly senstive to medicines. The reflux has been awful too in the middle of it all. I am going next week to get the tests done for CF. I am thinking of you. Isn;t it awful with all the technology, science etc. that little ones are put through so much before someone will actually tell you what is wrong with them. Try to keep calm for you are your baby sake and know you will get it sorted eventually. I wish I could take my own advice, I was throwing me and baby out the window on Wed.night after three nights up all night with her vomiting, coughing and screaming.I am still on my own as hubby not back from states until Sat. Oh the joys of motherhood!!!!! take care xxxx

Hi girls,

Just wondering how you are all going. We had our little one tested for CF on thursday. We have to wait 5 weeks for results. Fingers crossed. The paed changed her milk to enfamil ar and I have to say she has been great on it. I wish though she would settle at night. Those long nights are beginning to take its toll on all of us in our house. So thats the story with us at the minute. Hope your little ones are beginning to settle.

Have a good day!

lisalisa · 23/05/2006 22:33

Hi mumofthree64baby - enfamil ar is great isn't it? My ds is thankfully much more settle dnow - he's on maximum dose of omeprazole and a hopsital review coming up to increase dosage to keep pace with weight. I don't think we can expect our reflex babies to sleep through though can we? Mine wakes fairly frequently with tummy pains and I give gripe water and ) surprisingly perhaps) a feed wihch seems to settle him.
