Perforated bowel

Just heard my mum's best friend is in intensive care with a perforated bowel. That's quite serious isn't it? I think I remember being warned of that happening when DS1 had surgery as a baby (ie they could have done it by accident when they operated - but thankfully didn't).

Anyone know any more about it?

Perforated bowel is serious, yes. At it's very worst it could cause faecal peritonitis (where waste leaks from the bowel into the body/bloodstream and basically 'poisons' the patient. Some perforations are small and can repair themselves, larger ones may need suregry to repair them.

That is what I was dreading NDP

NASWM, my father in law died from faecal peritonitis as a result of the surgeon 'nicking' his bowel wall during prostate surgery. But it doesn't always end that way.

(btw, sorry for my dodgy typos in first post !)

Yes very serious, like you i don't know much about it, remember the footballers wife, she had a tummy tuck and lipo and a probe pierced her bowel perforating it, she was seriously ill, have fingers crossed you mums friend gets better soon!

thanks you 2. I am naturally worried for her - but also for my mum. Her other good friend died last year of cancer. She would take it badly if she lost another friend. I really hope she pulls through....

That sounds v selfish. I dont mean it to be. I am just worried for everyone that is all. :(

It isn't selfish at all, NASWM.
