Can contraceptive pills make you have to wee a lot?

Just wondering if anyone knows about this. I always, always have to get up at least once, sometimes 2-3 times a night to wee. I've been on one pillor another for so long, other than when I was actually pregnant and had to wee all the time anyway, that I've kind of gotten used to it but wondered if anyone else has found a connection between the two.

are you on yasmin?

Sugarmag · 22/03/2006 09:43

Yes, but I was on Dianette before that and it was the same.

yasmin has a hormone in it which is a derivative of spirinolactone a diruetic. One of the side effects that this pill is supposed to avoid is water retention and this is why. do you take your pill at night? you could try taking it first thing in the mornig.

Think that the combined pill can often give you side effects similarly to PG symptoms. agree with chapsmum - might be worth changing to taking it in the morning.

I already take it first thing in the morning. It might have nothing to do with the pill, I just thought I would see if anyone else had experienced this.

tbh sugar mag, I found that I was up to the toilet 2-3 times a night till my lo was about 7 months old, then thing seemed to settle. When your pregnant the capacity of your bladder shrinks because it is never allowed to expand as much a s pre preg. That coupled with the hormones could be enough to set it off! I am down to once per night and am not on the pill.

My youngest is 2.5 now so can't really blame it on aftereffects of pregnancy. Have to get my BP checked on Friday so I might ask the nurse about it.

Is that just a routine bp check?
It might be worth having a Urine sample sent off just to check for infection.

Sugarmag · 22/03/2006 10:54

Yes, just a routine BP check, I've never had any problems with it. Don't think it's infection as it's been like this for the last couple of years!

poor you! only thing I can remotely think of that may help is pelvic floor exercises. The urge to urinate comes from the detusitor muscle on the floor of your bladder, this can become damaged and streched during child birtha dn pregnancy. do your pelvic floorexercises religiously and if its really disturbing your sleep perhaps a referal to a continance clinic

HTH

I'm doing them right now! Grin
