Has anyones child got a sore throat and then become immediately chesty?

Dd 5 was sent home from school today with a sore throat and a temperature. In a matter of 2 hours she became really chesty. She still has a temp but am keeping it lowered with calpol and ibruprofen but she is really in pain and sounds really wheezy. She's red faced and eyed and very lethargic, The school nurse said that a few of the kids had got it. I cant get in with the Doctor until tomorrow evening.

A few weeks ago she had the influenza B thing. I don't think she's really recovered tbh (which is not like her at all).

She's been off school for a week now, still not eating properly and looks so pale and drawn. I am getting a bit concerned, especially as the whole family seem to have it now and we just seem stuck in this cycle waiting to see who gets better first in order to get on top of things (me and dh that is)

I've honestly never known a winter like it for illness (except for about 10 odd years ago pre-children)

Thanks Mercy we have had a winter like this too in Spain. Dd has been ok for a week and now this. Did you take her to the Dr what did they say? I only ask as I cant see Dr until tomorrow night and have no access to NHS Direct, doctor on call etc. I could take her to the emergancy room but they will probably say that she has a broken leg, if past experiences are anything to go by.

I didn't/haven't taken her to the doctor as she has only had slight pain when coughing and has only produced tiny bits of phlegm. It's more a temperature and weirdo eyes with her, plus total lethargy and lack of appetite. Rest and echinacea is the order of the day!

You obviously really rate Spanish healthcare!

But seriously, pain on breathing and wheeziness does not sound good to me. Is there really no out of hours clinic?

How is the breathing, is it laboured/ an effort to breathe plus wheezing?

lucy, you can get nhs direct advice on the internet, not sure how to do a link but just google nhsdirect. they have useful flowcharts though nothing substitutes your own instinct.

My dd recently had a fluey thing which went quite quickly to her chest so coughing was painful. She had to have antibiotics, and was much better after they kicked in.

She has a sore throat a fever that im only just managing to keep below 39 and a hacking cough. She's thrown up flem too. Ive stripped her ,damp clothed her, calpoled and ibruprofened her and now ive got the fan on her and she's sleeping fitfully. She's been so good about it, it makes me feel worse. No point to this post really just wanted to get it off my chest, [no pun intended]. Thanks for the advice.

Don't have any other advice except to say that we've had a rotten winter for illnesses too - roll on spring...

Still really poorly but managed to get into a drs, she's got tonsillitus. [sp]

Oh poor little mite, I hate tonsillitis - bet she feels really grotty.

Still, huge bonus that she's older and can tell you how she feels - bizarrely when I get tonsillitis I can't drink cold drinks (hurts too much) but warm drinks slip down fine - don't know if that's just a personal quirk or if that holds true with tonsillitis in general :)

Hope she recovers quickly...
