DS LEG

My DS is 2 and a half and on Saturday he suddenly started limping. Since then his leg as just given way underneath him and he has fallen to the floor. Then all of a sudden it's all OK again, then it repeats itself over and over again. He isn't complaining except when he falls. Took him to A&E they said it's looks as though it is just a sprain and to come back in a week if it is still happening. Do you think that is acceptable?

have they given you any anti inflammatories or advised Nurofen ? Has he injured it recently or had a cold/virus?

SnowdropsInTheSpring · 20/03/2006 14:25

I would maybe ask for an x-ray in case its got a slight fracture. Sounds like its nothing but i would go back, better to be
safe than sorry.

HappyMumof2 · 20/03/2006 14:25

dd has been getting this on and off for weeks now. I took her to the GP who said it could be her hip or knee. Have to take her back in a few weeks. You could ask for an x-ray?

Welly381 · 20/03/2006 14:26

Hi Liz, thanks, it's the first time I have used mums net and wasn't sure if it was correct!! No they didn't give any anti inflammatories or advise nurofen, but he has got a cold at the moment. Would that be the problem. He ends up crawling for periods after he has fallen.

I'd go back - last week dd started being unable to weight bear - complaining her knee hurt
WE were diagnosed with a post viral joint irritation. They also should routinely xray hips for such condition as Perthes Disease (not as scary as it sounds esp in little ones) and things
A sprain would hurt and swell and restrict the joint for consectutive days. it would not let up and relapse again
Go adn ask for an xray, then at least you can rule out a lot of othe things
I'm amazed they did not xray tbh.

Piffle · 20/03/2006 14:29

could well be the post viral thing my dd had
no pain except when she tried to put weight on her leg?
I'll dig out my thread hang on...

Welly381 · 20/03/2006 14:30

HappyMumof2, did you get an x-ray done? The Dr said I could but I declined as she said it would be pointless as it was obvious it wasn't fractured or broken as he was able to move it around quite a bit. Typical though he was OK all the time at the hospital but as soon as we got back to the car the leg gave way and he fell down in the car park. Bless him!

\link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=138&threadid=154974&stamp=060319123008\does this sound similar?}

Welly381 · 20/03/2006 14:34

Dear Piffle, thanks for that, I have skimmed through it and it all sounds really informative, I think another visit to the Hospital is needed. None of the things that were mentioned in your conversations were even hinted at at the hospital. This has been ever so useful.

Today a week after this started we saw orthopaedic consultant in fracture clinic, he said to determine the post viral thing, they SHOULD HAVE taken a blood sample.
He is seeing us again in a week.
DD seems better.
When did you take your ds to A+E?

Welly381 · 20/03/2006 16:26

Hi Piffle

Went to A&E this morning, not too much of a wait. Little boy is struggling quite a bit now and I am getting more and more concerned. Had to take him to collect DD from school in his buggy. I hate seeing him like this. I will look into this virus thing.

HappyMumof2 · 20/03/2006 16:33

I didn't request an x ray. I'm waiting to see how it goes really. It's strange as it was happening every morning, now less, and she just won't walk on it. She can crawl on it though, but it does kind of give way under her.
She's recently had chicken pox - I wonder whether it's this post viral thing for her too?
When I go back I might ask for one depending on how often it's happening then.

Hope your little one is better soon Smile

Piffle · 20/03/2006 17:21

crikey this is happening a lot at the moment
dd had a double ear infection the week before and, like your dd happymum, dd can crawl and do everything, but not walk, even today a week on, she will stand but not walk.

Piffle · 20/03/2006 17:22

ps official name for googling purposes is transient synovitis Grin usually in hip but hey, what are our kids for if not to be average huh!!!!!!!!!
