Ds (16m) has had a pin prick sort of rash all over his back and torso all day. It disappears under a glass and his temp has been 100 but he has been pretty much ok in himself. When I bathed him tonight a spot had appeared that did not disappear under a glass. It's only one spot and his temp is still ok but I just need to know how I keep an eye on him in the night short of keep undressing him !! Is an increase in temperature the right thing to look out for or could he have something horrible without that happening?

TIA Smile

if you are talking about menengitis, it is possible to have it without a temperature. Dd never had a temperature.
How has he been in himself? Is he responsive? Is he focusing on you? Have you noticed his hands/feet, are they cold?

If it's just 1 spot, I wouldn't be too worried. If he seemed happy in himself even less cause to worry imo - my doctor said to me a while ago 'a child who plays/shows interest in toys isn't that ill. Have you given something to get the temp down? Is he asleep now? If you really are concerned though, call NHS direct.

Thanks for replying. He is ok in himself, playing, wanting to do all the usual things. I know I am fretting. He has had the rash all day, it's just that we have the glass thing drummed into us and now there is a bad spot...!

this sounds like what our DS has. Have a look at my thread.

the reason we ended up going to the gp was his rash didnt totally disappear under glass. we werre told to keep his temp down with calpol and keep an eye for any changes in rash/sickness/vomit/antyhing unusual.

a menengitis rash is like a collection of bruises, but is not present in all types of menengitis. Also, generally, it is the last sign to appear.
Dd never had a rash.
If he is well in himself, I wouldn't be too worried. Has he has chicken pox? Could it be a chicken pox spot? (as it's one on it's own)

we had this a few weeks ago

(see this \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=43&threadid=152530&stamp=060308104808\thread} )

He was covered in a pin prick rash - although typical slapped cheek is like lace it can also be like tiny pimples (so the doctor told me although by the time we saw him, his rash was going and we went for something else!). About 4 or 5 others in his class came down with it about a week later (and I noticed other children with the rash a few days before ds came down with it!).
