It hurts but why?

Woke up this morning with a cramp sensation a bit below my ribs. Too high to be period pains, too low (imo) to be indegestion does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be?

I've taken painkillers and they've dulled it down but it's still there.

I know it seems trivial but it hurts and I know that I've got no chance of getting in to see a dr between here and the New Year.

Jenie - I know it sounds a bit daft, but I think it sounds like trapped wind. I've had it a few times and its bloody painful!!! Its even spread to where it feels like my back and kidneys are hurting!

Why don't you try indigestion stuff coz it also helps relieve trapped wind. If it doesn't got away over the next 24 hours I would get an emergency appointment just to get it checked out. Does your local hospital run and Out Of Hours Surgery?

Jenie · 23/12/2003 09:39

Yeah but it'll be too busy to even think about going in, right now I'm willing to try anything so off to the medicine cupboard with me.

Thank you for getting back to me

I know the feeling Jenie! Isn't it awful when your life committments overtake your health in the priority stakes??!
Nevermind, I'm sure it'll pass during today, but I do know how uncomfortable it can be.

oh my god...Since a wk monday i have had the same thing.is urs worse when u lie down??
Its like it hurts to breathe in...

Jenie · 23/12/2003 10:13

Yes it does hurt more when I lie flat, and breathing........ don't talk to me about breathing - is it realy essential, I think that it may be over rated

Have taken some indigestion things and am waiting for them to work, managed to throw out some old medicines whilst I was there so managed to do something other than sit on mn all day

Have you had a cold or anything lately. Is it tender to touch your ribs. There is pneumonia going around a bit at the moment and trouble breathing (in especially) and pain near the bottom of your ribs can sometimes be signs. Are you coughing up any phlegm? If so is it clear, brown, green (yuck I know). Does it have blood in it? If congestion is solid sometimes you don't cough anything up but all these types of things are good to go to the doctors or emergency room knowing.

Those antacid tablets are working, she said looking sheepish and feeling just a bit silly. Seems as though it's shifted to a bit lower than it was. When I lie down it hurts like hell and beathing I'd still prefer to be optional. Yet it does hurt less.

Thank you.

If it hurts when you breathe I think it might be worth chasing up a doctor or even going to casualty. I had something similar a few years ago after a bad cold while working very long hours and because I didn't go to a doctor early enough it got quite serious. I had pleurisy (which is swelling of the membrane of the lung), but because I hadn't seen a doctor and I wasn't breathing deeply enough I also collapsed part of my lung. So breathe, even if it hurts a bit, I had to do 3 or 4 very deep breaths every hour or so to keep my lungs clear until I was well enough to do the normal deep breathing things like walking fast or going up stairs.

Just re-read all that and don't mean to scare you, it's more likely to be something minor, but it's definitely worth checking it out if you can.

bran · 23/12/2003 11:14

Oops, posts crossed. Looks like it was indigestion after all. Good news.

CONNEELY · 23/12/2003 11:27

No wonder our babys cry with it!

My SIl went to casualty beacuse she hadn't done a poo for a week. Stuck a suppository up her bum, pulled the curtain round and waited for her to perform. Know someone else who went to casualty for trapped wind, it showed up on the x-ray!
