c-section and IBS

Have just been reading the thread on itchy c-section scars and it reminded me of a topic I have been meaning to raise for a while.

I have have had Irritable bowel since the birth of my daughter by c-section 18 months ago. I have talked to my doctor about why / how, and I am convinced having a c-section has somehow caused this. Does anyone know of any research or evidence of a link between IBS and c-sections? When you have a c-section does the surgeon have to move the intestines out of the way? Could this cause inflammation or infection in the bowel?

Just wondered if anyone knew of any link - I haven't found anything by searching the internet.

following on from the other thread I guess scar tissue could cause an obstruction.

It might be worth searching for links about the drugs used and IBS.

jimjambells, do you mean the painkillers or anaesthetic given for c-section?

no idea- whatever you had. Just if you browsed and found that others had developed IBS after having whatever drug treatment then you could be onto something. Not all that sure its likely.

You will have had antibiotics as well probably. Maybe worth taking probiotics and seeing if that helps.

Debl - sorry to hear about your ibs. I had a section 6 months ago and had horrible bowel problems afterwards. I got a paralytic illius (sp?) and ended up being readmitted for 8 nights two weeks after dd was born. To be honest no one gave me any real explanation but a couple of the consultants reckoned it might have happened because my intestines went into 'shock' at being manhandled during the op and so my bowel just packed up! I've had a couple of episodes since (stomach pains, constipation, spectacular wind ) but I don't know if this might be proper ibs. Does this sound similar to your probs? Reading between the lines I reckon my section was a bit of a hash job - (I also got an infection) - and it did feel REALLY uncomfortable when they were doing it - unlike my first with ds.

I had IBS prior to pregnancy and birth but it has gotten really bad since my birth approx a week ago. Despite passing a stool at the hospital I was then constipated for 5 days and following an unbelievably painful bowel movement, I've had gastro pain and severe urgency. This is humiliating but I wasn't actually able to make it to the toilet on occasion.
I wasn't bad during pregnancy. I don't know if it was the emergency c section, the drugs, or the fact that my bowels are having to adjust with the absence of a baby in there but I do know I'm so much worse since.

This is really interesting to me as I have had severe constipation since c section 14 weeks ago. Despite laxatives it's still really difficult to go each time. I also had a ? Obstruction day after surgery and was really poorly but it managed to resolve itself at that time.
