My dd has had cough for couple of weeks been to Dr chest, lungs clear told her could last 4 - 6 weeks. The cough is the type that is uncontollable coughing fit, tonight she says every time she coughs pain in head (obviously from all the coughing) really getting her down, I know coughs can leave you feeling really tired but as she is childminder could do without this.

Any one any good remedies for helping a cough? Tried everything I can think of.

Coedine supresses the cough reflex. It is a painkiller and shouldn't be used to get rid of a cough but ..............

Coughs are there for a reason to clear mucus, so not good to suppress them. Although sounds like by now the infection (I.e. cold virus) is long gone and she is just left with a tickle. I am just getting over a viral chest infection and I found that I coukdn't sleep because I was coughing and wheezing at night. So I made sure u took my salbutamol inhaler (normally only mildly asthmatic so don't need it) and also took benylin mucus cough before bed, which does shit all for my cough but knocks me out so at least I get some sleep! I've heard that rubbing Vicks on the soles of your feet & putting on socks is supposed to help. I think the Vicks has a warming effect on the reflexology zones. Sucking honey & glycerine lozenges helps south the throat.

You can also get a cough medicine called Pholcodeine.

That medicine looks good Tabby, useful to know. Can it be bought in most chemists?

Thanks actually went to pharmacist this morning about pain in head when coughing seen this man once before and he is dreadful, put fear of God into dd telling her didn't know what it is but very very serious, said I don't want to worry you but you need to see Dr immediately.

DD phoned NHS direct who told her it's a muscle thing nothing to worry about.

I want to punch the pharmacist this is second time we seen him (2 different problems) and both times he said doesn't know what problem is but extremely serious.
