Just wondered if anyone has taken this for migraine?

Did it help? Any side effects?

Many thanks :)

Hi there Grin I take 300 mg a day in 2 150mg doses I have MS and had permanent headaches that turned to full blown migraines at least once a week. I have one today but it's not a blinder & I haven't had one for at least 2 months so it works Smile

The side. Effects: when you first start you may slur & mix up your words I did so inform your employers ( I was being interviewed for redundancy or keeping my job - I lost my jobSad)
Bonus' I lost weight! It will put you off food & change your appetite so be careful if you're a skinny Minnie - I wasn't & am happy I've lost weight. Also you need to drink plenty of water x good luck they do a great job & the slurry side effects go Wink

I also experienced word difficulty on a high dose of Topamax.. Same dosage as Mumma..that affect did decrease as soon as dose was dropped...I must take it for epilepsy, which my physician believes may be triggered by migraine. Sadly, I never had a weight decrease..

Hi. I take 50mg per day for migraine prevention. Have done for, it must be, 3 - 4 years now. No nasty side effects for me - have lost a little weight Smile . The frequency and intensity of my migraines as reduced since I've been taking them.

Thanks for the replies :)

I did google but found lots of negatives.

Were any of you advised to have an eye test before you started taking the tablets? My dr said I should but according to google its pointless - won't diagnose at risk eyes - and I had an eye test about 5 months ago which were fine.

Picking up my tablets today so will probably start them tonight. Was told to take 25mg at night for 2 weeks, then add 25mg in the morning for 2 weeks, then back to see the gp.

No, I didn't have an eye test, but I do my eyes tested every year anyway. I started on 25mg, then upped it to 50. I was advised to take it in the evening ( sorry, can't remember why!) but I do Smile

Mum, I forgot to mention the side effect that also drove me to beg my physician for a dosage reduction...hair loss. My thick mid back length hair became much thinner. I was not advised re eye test. My vision has remained within normal limits.

Tuttutitlookslikerain · 04/09/2012 17:03

I take it (50mg morning and night). I have gone from having about 15 migraines a month to 3 or 4.

mumofjust1 · 04/09/2012 18:53

Cynner - yes, I had heard about the hairloss. My hair isn't too bad so will just see how it goes.

Kinelle - do you take the whole 50mg at night?

Tuttut - is that 50mg am and 50mg pm?

I'm a bit worried about the eye complications to be honest - doesn't sound like fun, but maybe less likeky on lower dosages?

I think I may start taking it on Friday night - I have next week off work, so it'll be easier to deal with any side effects.

Mum, yes I take 1 50mg capsule at night. My Dr didn't warn me about any side effects, apart from not to conceive whilst on them - probably because I'm on a relatively small dose. I have to say if I'd googled before I started taking them ( I have since developed a tenadancy to refer to Dr Google, and scare myself witless! Hmm) I may have been a bit more reluctant. But I am glad I take them, as there's not a lot worse than a migraine in my eyes, and these little beauties have certainly helped me. Good luck, hopefully, like me, you will be side effect free Smile

MummaSutton · 05/09/2012 01:29

To kinelle and others I would highly reccomend the medscape app (iPhone and android) And online i think it's free on both if you are worried about interactions with prescribed meds, OTC meds and specific contraception it is so very helpful Wink
It's American so some you will need the us name for it but gives you tons of reliable info about a lot of things that google will scare the shit out of you for no reason.

Just in case you didn't know Grin

Hope you get on ok with your topi's & the evil heads do one Smile they are a little miracle & the slur does go if you get one. Also you take the 1st week at night to adjust it in your system & lessen side effects I think?Hmm
Take care all xx
