Massive veins, unexplained bruising in legs - anyone had this?

I keep getting massive bruises on my legs. Bigger than my hand massive. And bruises in funny places like the back of my knee.

Was on my feet a lot today and dd pointed out that part of my foot was blue. I looked and 2 of my veins were so bright blue they literally looked luminous (by my big toe). The veins are so large in my feet and legs, I look like an AA road map.

Is this normal? Should I be worried? I am fair so have paler skin so maybe thats why they are more visible. Bear in mind that if you think I should see the doc, I have the sort of doc who has the standard response 'come back in 6 weeks if it's not better'.

That sounds weird. I would insist on an appoitment if it's something circulatory

foxinsocks · 30/08/2012 22:18

Yeah it is weird innit. I also fly a lot for work so I am super cautious about thrombosis etc but I haven't got any swelling.

Have a feeling it's to do with getting old fgs. My mum had problem veins but there wasn't much they did for hers.

Yes, definitely see a doctor. I wonder if it could be ITP? Do you get petechiae i.e. tiny bruises in clusters? In any case, it doesn't sound normal at all and I would be off to a GP as soon as possible.

winnybella · 30/08/2012 22:22

And not to scare you but bruising could be caused by leukemia as well (and I'm sure also by many less serious illnesses) so I would definitely check it out. Could be anemia or something to do with the heart, perhaps Confused

Thanks guys. I am back home next week (on hols now) so will book an appointment when back and the doc better take it seriously grrr. The bruises on my shinslook like normal bruises to me - not petechiae but the ones on the back of my leg look a bit like that

I have horrid veins on the front of my knees that cluster and look like a big purple bruise. I get them if I've been standing for ages and did if I'm on. They throb like buggery too

But not any of your other symptoms...Deffo see the doc

foxinsocks · 30/08/2012 22:35

It will be getting old I bet fgs. Bloody giant throbbing veins. Thank god for the cold weather in the uk. Is 33C here so that might be exacerbating it

See a doctor, fox and insist on a blood test!

Large, unexplained bruises can be a sign of a blood disorder and/or leukaemia.

NO 'come back in 6 weeks'. Not a good enough response!

Lilymaid · 31/08/2012 10:19

Another (hopefully) scaremonger recommending a blood test. DS2 went into hospital last year with a bad bruise on his leg (thought it was a football tackle injury but couldn't recall having been badly tackled) and had a blood test ...
The next day he was transferred to Oncology/Haematology.

expatinscotland · 31/08/2012 10:39

DD1's 'symptom' was bruising. She went on to develop a large bruise with petichae, yes, but even in A&E the doc said, 'She has a lot of bruises'.

She had leukaemia. A blood test confirmed this in hours after she was seen in A&E and she was transferred to oncology.

Similar to another patient. His parents thought they were going to be arrested when they took their son to A&E and the doc said the same thing to them. His mother said they were asked to come into a side office and she told her husband to brace himself, as there might be police and social work there.

Instead, there was a consultant and a nurse to tell them their son had leukaemia.

Thanks expat and lily xx

It did cross my mind expat when I was following Aillidh's story. I will go to doc when I get back. I need another blood test as I'm often B12 deficient so they need to check on that.

It could be related to deficiency, but you need to have it checked out and don't stand for being fobbed off!

foxinsocks · 31/08/2012 11:01

Yes I won't this time as I am sufficiently worried now. When they could be explained by knocks it was one thing. Now they are in places where I couldn't be knocked it is a whole lot more suspicious Sad
