lump back of neck

Hi, my son has a pea sized lump on his neck, further back than his ear, and in the midle. He has a cold too.
I have searched prev threads, and deduced that it is prob a harmless cyst, or his glands are up.
But......... when he has nearly one he had an emergency op to remove an abcess from the other side, and I'm worried it may be another one. It's difficult though, because when he was tiny, he was just really generally 'unwell', and then his cheeks, side of face, ears side swelled up. The doc said mumps but it wasnt, as the hosp then said an abcess. The abcess wound was under his ear...So I never at the time actually noticed whether it started as pea size lump, or just a general swelling. Can anyone reassure me its not an abcess starting, or if they reoccour once you have had one (he is 6 now). Sorry to ramble!

I had something like this several years ago and was given antibiotics for it. It cleared up in about a week.
