Virus in knee joints

Poor ds2 had a temperature last week, with some diarrhoea (sp?) - it's a bug which is doing the rounds here in Oxfordshire. However, he tried to get up off the settee on Thurs eveing and screamed with pain. He couldn't bear me to touch his knees or his feet and even turning over in bed, where I eventually got him, was incredibly painful. Neurofen took the edge off the pain, so that he can lie and turn carefully without discomfort, and I can carry him up and down stairs OK. A visit to the doc on Friday afternoon - he said that the virus has settled in the knee joints (fortunately only the knees - it can be all joints, in which case he would be hsopitalised for steriod treatment)

Anyone had experience of this and have any idea how long it might last? The doc suggested that things should improve in 3 to 4 days, but I know of one other person who had it in one leg only, but who still had it after a week.

Any advice much appreciated.

dd once had a inflammation in her hip joint after a cold which made her limp. Went after a few days of anti inflammatories.

Verytitedmum - I've had something similar with a Strep infection. Symptoms similar to arthritis in hands, hip and both knees. It was agony particularly in the mornings - your poor ds.

I took lots of ibuprofen plus anti-b's as it was bacterial and the worst of it was gone in a week although it did linger for quite a bit longer. Is your doc sure it's viral? Mine would have been much worse without the anti-b's.

Many thanks Ladies. I'll check re the Strep infection when we go back to the doctor's on Tuesday am. Ds still v. weak and sleepy, but can move his legs a little this morning on his own, which suggests he might be a little better.
