IUD reported missing

I went to see my gynae yesterday to get him to take my IUD out (fed up with copious bleeding day after day & horrendous cramps). He couldn't find it! He did an ultrasound & has now booked me for some kind of surgical proceedure for next Fri (he's away for 5 days). He gave me the Pill to take immediately to stop the bleeding (but it doesn't seem to have worked -- yet). My friends were horrified & told me to go to the hosp asap. What do you think? Has this happened to anyone else? What are the risks?

Blimey

I have no idea, maybe you should ring your local A&E and ask their advice.

someone I know had hers removed with keyhole surgery last week. She was fine afterwards! She had to wait a few weeks after the x ray which located it to having it removed and was ok.

Sans, see the Mirena thread. You're not alone!

expatinscotland · 11/03/2006 16:38

They tried to get me to get one of these things. Um, no, I'm not having anything that may require surgery under GA to get out!

This happened to me about 18 mths ago my coil became dislodged and i was taken to hospital with horrendous bleeding. I nearly had to have a blood transfusion because i lost so much blood. The doctors had to give me a tablet to stop the bleeding and kept me in hospital overnight to monitor me.If you are still bleeding now i would contact your gp or local hospital and explain the pill hasn't worked, cos i would hate for you to go through what i did. Best of luck and hope your feeling better soon.

Have taken 2 of the Pills but the only change is that my breasts have gotten even bigger & my appetite's increased! I think I'll wait till tomorrow & get a second opinion. On the other hand, I trust my gynae & I don't believe he'd make me wait until he comes back from his trip if I was in any danger.

I wonder how this could have happened. I've had IUDs many times, including Mirena (bad side-effects for me: I'm not good with hormones) & nothing like this has ever happened.

What are my options for birth control now besides condoms? I'm allergic to latex btw. Maybe I should have my tubes tied?

i'd like my tubes tied, but they make you wait until a year after your last baby here b/c the failure rate is higher before that. well, DH will be eligible to have a vasectomy just a few months after that - they make a man wait till he's 30 here unless he's fathered at least 4 kids - so i guess we'll wait till then as that's easier and he wanted the vasectomy in the first place.

sansouci · 12/03/2006 11:31

Ha-ha! Vasectomies are quite the subject in our family. My sister, for example, who now has 3 kids under the age of 4, forced her dh to have one by threatening to deny him his "conjugal rights". Personally, I think that's a bit harsh but my sister is right old bossyboots. Whereas my dh is uncomfortable with idea because he believes he'll be emasculated in some way. Go figure!

Besides, vasectomies don't always work. There was this Irish guy here in Geneva who had one but managed to get 3 women pregnant. And he was married (wife stuck in Ireland with a houseful of babies)!

Well, the only thing that's 100% is abstinence, but vasectomy is BY FAR THE most effecitve form of contraception for sexually active people, bar none.

DH's dad had one and has been nothing but pleased. Ditto my dad and BIL.

update. saw gynae this morning who removed IUD & told me I have a large polyp that needs to be surgically removed. What exactly is a polyp, could it possibly be malignant, how did it get there? I should have asked him these questions myself but I was a bit stunned.
