Why won't this chest infection fuck the fuck off? End of my rope here :(

Got a chest infection 7 weeks ago. Two lots of antibiotics didn't fix it and ventolin inhaler didn't help much. Then got a lot worse last week, felt like I had flu or something. Went to GP yet again and she said I may have had pneumonia, so I got even stronger antibiotics and some steroids. Had an x-ray after 2 days on these, and my lungs are actually clear so I think it's unlikely to have been pneumonia.

Nearly finished the antibiotics but still feel no better really - chest still congested and painful. I felt better for a couple of days but, just like on the other two courses, I feel worse again. Have spent much of today trying not to cry because I ache so much, I can barely get off the sofa. The ache is worse than the chest now but I expect if I exerted myself I'd be coughing up stuff again.

I don't know what's going on here. I have had heaps of chest infections throughout my life (I'm 25 and my mum's family are very prone to them) but they've always gone in 10 days tops, usually without any medication. I have been feeling so ridiculously run down and just can't seem to fight it :(

I am not anaemic, thyroid is fine, blood pressure great. Not asthmatic, and have never smoked. I increased to full time hours in April and I feel like its killing me. I am having a test for Cushings but the doctor who ordered it said it is extremely unlikely and is just to rule it out (basically she decided to do it just because my post-baby stretch marks are a bit dark Blush) so I'm not banking on that as an answer.

Really can't handle this any more, any ideas?

Sorry but cant really suggest anything, I have had a viral infection which resulted in whooping cough type symptoms for over 6 weeks and I am only now starting to feel anywhere near back to myself, have been off work for 5 weeks so far. The GP said this was going around and could take 6 - 8 weeks to clear. I have never been ill for more than 1 - 2 weeks but this wiped me! I am taking metatone tonic and floradix tonic for the past week or two, it should help build up your immune system which may help to aid recovery.

Thank you. Finished Abx yesterday, cough is fairly superficial now but I ache so so much. Things like eating wipe me out. I burst into tears yesterday as I was standing in the kitchen and couldn't move - had to get DH to move me back to the sofa Blush

Seeing GP on Tuesday and I don't know what to ask. Apart from "why the fuck am I STILL unwell" :(

Hope you continue recovering zenam Thanks

I would try high dose vitamin C. You can get it from health food stores. Google approriate amounts. You may think its quakery but what have you got to lose.

I don't want to scaremonger, but has your GP rules out TB? (Was listening to a programme about this at the weekend.)

I hope you feel better soon!

Thank you, I am not too worried about TB any more (have to say it had crossed my mind though!) as my chest is finally pretty much better. The X-ray was clear in the lungs themselves so definitely a good sign.

Went to the doctors yesterday as although the chest is pretty clear I am still really unwell. He said I have viral myalgia and gave me stronger anti-inflammatories, and I will be off work for at least 2 more weeks :(

I am considering getting some vitamins to boost me up a bit - I will probably be having some blood tests soon so I will be asking them to check B12 and D in particular.
