it's the third day and i'm feeling really shit! please tell me that i'm on the mend. i can't help but feel utterly disgusting. it's sore and i just want it to go away. stuck indoors - no children so i'm all on my own. i want it to fade. how long will it take? anyone else in the same boat? sick to the sight of calamine lotion :( !!

It doesn't last long in children, I'm not sure about duration in adults though. Try hanging oats in a sock in the running water of your bath, that is very soothing, and piriton if the spots get very itchy. As soon as no new spots are appearing then you are on the mend btw. Poor you!

:( Sorry you're feeling rough. It will start drying up soon - everything I've read on here suggests day 3 is the worst, so from now on things should improve. Maybe others can give you a better idea of how long it will take to fade completely?

Thinking of you; I know it must feel horrible.

thanks - it feels so grim. i woke up this morning with spots in my ears and on my face. it looks so gross. i'm going to try that oat/sock thing.

How are you feeling - did you try the oat bath? Any new spots?

I had chicken pox at the age of 30 & the tiredness at the start was awful. (I didn't knowthe symptons would get worse!) But the itch of those spots drove me mad & I had the gp out twice (the first time in my life for ahome visit-this was 15+years ago when your own gp would do home visits) However after the first 5 days I definitely felt an improvement. Looked awful for about 2weeks. You will feel better very soon, but probably be wiped out with fatigue for 3-4weeks afterwards. Hope this helps (I had a baby,2yr old & 4yrs old at the time-so tiredness was a common occurence anyway). Get well soon.

I've had chicken pox three bloody times now, so I entirely sympathise.
It took about a week for my spots to start clearing up, so not very long, but by gum do they itch when they're out!

My doctor couldn't believe it when I had it for the third time (old family friend, now retired) as he'd diagnosed me during the previous two episodes.

Apparently peppermint oil is good for the itching, better than calamine lotion apparently, although I've never tried it myself.

Hope you feel better soon.

hi, chickenpox are the bain of my life at the moment, both younger girls ahve had it one after the other feels like we ahve been stuck in for weeks!!! top tip for itching (from my friend who had 3 kiddies get it one after the other .. why cant they all just get it at the same time???) is use hay fever medicine, (piriton even says on the label to ease chickenpox itching but even the cheaper ones work) it was a life saver for my girls. it will be gone before you know it, its just dull stuck inside all the time

PoxRiddenAndPissedOff · 03/08/2012 22:57

thank you ladies :) you are kind! i appreciate your tips and advice.

three times! crikey - poor thing! and i hope your children are better, safia1.

i haven't felt this tired in ages but sleeping seems impossible as it's so uncomfortable. i've tried the oat poultice which did help in the bath and the doctor also suggested sodium bicarbonate. i will try peppermint oil and piriton too. i can feel them on my head as well. they hurt so bad i was crying earlier. i finally managed to find a nightie that's loose enough to not stick to my back (although it does make me look like crazy Bertha in Jane Eyre Grin ). i hope i don't wake in the morning to find hundreds more.

it would be nice to be out and about in the sun but it does mean i get to indulge in some dvds and rewatch 'Sherlock' over and again....
