Anyone know what a normal throat looks like if you've had a tonsillectomy?

Sorry for the really dull question. I have been off work for the past two days feeling pretty rough. Thought it was just a really bad cold but my throat really hurts. I had my tonsils out about 10 years ago and - I know this sounds stupid - haven't really looked down my throat since then. I've just looked in the mirror now and I have a white ball on one side of my throat. Could this be a scar from the tonsillectomy or is it more likely to be an infection that I need to get anti-biotics for? I really don't want to bother the doctor if it is just a cold...

Thanks.

I had my tonsils out as a small child, and have just looked down my throat in the mirror in the name of science :o No white balls to be seen anywhere. Does sound like an infection. I'd probably see the doctor if it doesn't clear on its own or if it gets any worse, but if it's only been two days I'd probably be tempted to give it a bit more time to go away by itself. Hope you feel better soon!

Thank you so much Naoko! Much appreciated! Right plan is to see if white stuff is still there tomorrow and if worse, then to see GP.

Thanks again.

I had mine out when I was a kid. Just looked for you. It's just a clear throat. Can't see anything at all.

Although it does appear the odd lump on my uvula is back Hmm

Could you have thrush?

BlameItOnTheBogey · 24/07/2012 15:44

Hmm that's a good thought re thrush. Would it make my ears hurt and make me feel rubbish too, do you think?

(Odd lump on uvula doesn't sound good...)

I have otitis externa which is quite thrush like here

Sounds like you may have a bit of an infection. Nip off to GP

Why, every time I go to type 'thrush' do I type 'thrust' and have to sort it out Hmm

Yep I've had my tonsils out more than 30 years ago, never had a white patch, almost certainly an infection.

nickelbarapasaurus · 24/07/2012 16:43

white stuff sounds like an infection.

this is exactly the reason i won't let them take out my tonsils.

Thanks everyone - mumsnet is totally brilliant for this kind of thing! Had Dh check (lucky him) and he agrees there is a white patch so I guess it is off to the Drs tomorrow.

Nickel I know I am not a shining example at the moment but having my tonsils out literally changed my life. I spent all my childhood being told I would grow out of tonsillitis. Then all my years at uni being on antibiotics one week out of every four. I finally had them out in my mid 20's and if this is an infection, it'll be the first I have had since then (10 years ago). Evidenced by the fact that I don't even know what my throat should look like! I know it isn't that way for everyone and no idea how bad your throat is but it might be worth considering?
