Circumcision - what do you think?

I have just read on another baby site about mothers planning to get their boy babies circumcised. I have 3 boys (4, 2 and 1) and have never thought about it or heard anyone else even mention it - am I missing something? Is this normal? I really thought people only had it done for religious reasons but they kept mentioning infections. I vaguely remember being told you didnt have to clean little boys in any special way but again now I'm beginning to wonder if I should be doing more (doing nothing now!!!) Help please!

I've read that too (that you should just leave well alone) and anything else is like to cause problems in later life.

I don't think many people circumcise for non-religious reasons in the UK.

My DS (who is 10 months) may need to be circumsised.

Sometimes the foreskin on a baby can be too tight and so intervention is required. We noticed a problem with him pretty much from the outset - in fact the MW mentioned it straight after he was born.

We took him to the docs about 3 months ago to follow it up and we have to go back again soon.

Its quite likely he will need this - all three of my brothers and my dad were done for the same reason. TBH, my mum wanted my youngest brother done whilst a baby because she knew too he would have a problem and it was refused until he was really suffering at about 4 years old. To have to go into hospital at that age when you are more aware of your surroundings etc is far more frightening and to wait so long just caused unnecessary suffering.

Id rather DS was sorted sooner rather than later, however, we have to place trust in what our docs are telling us atm.

With baby boys there is no special cleaning you have to do - this is a medical problem not a hygiene one.

And, in fact, you should never pull the foreskin back to clean it in baby boys.

It is just that you will end up with arguements if you are not careful

lfm · 04/03/2006 21:14

Oops - am relatively new to mumsnet and didnt know how to search - did think it must have been mentioned before but didnt see it when I looked at up-to-date stuff. Cant be bothered reading 545 topics - can see why you want to stop getting it all again!!!

I was just wanting you to be aware that it could end up in a fight

lfm · 04/03/2006 21:22

That's Ok - no offence taken. I genuinely just wondered about it as I hadnt thought about it before but I should have realised the potential for upset.
