Think I have gout and it *HURTS*

Hi, I have had the most incredible sore right big toe since Sunday. It is agony ans is so sore atm. Managed to get an appt with my gp today and she thinks it is gout. Going to do a blood test to check acid levels and in the meantime has just given me a prescription for 400mg of ibuprofen. I lost my lovely Mum last week, I now can feel just abit of the pain she must have been in. She was diabetic and developed gangrene which spread through her right foot, my poor poor Mum. :(

I don't have any experience of gout but I believe it can be very painful, I hope your doctor can do something to help.

Can't help with the toe problem, but at least you'rr getting it looked at, but am so sorry to hear about your Mum.

Thank you.............just been googling about gout and it says it can be triggered by a stressful event, just been thru hell with my poor poor Mum.

Dh gets gout and yes, it's excruciating. Says it's like having stubbed your toe really badly, only much worse.
He hasn't had an attack for years now, as he keeps it under control with Allopurinal taken daily. If he feels an attack coming on, he takes Naproxen (an anti-inflammatory).
He doesn't eat (and never has eaten) any of the stuff that's supposed to cause/aggravate it, and he is not overweight at all - for all those people who joke about Henry VIII. It's a build-up of uric acid in the bloodstream, I believe.

Firstly sorry about your mum , secondly by dh gets this, doc gave him something called collinchicol (no idea if thats right spelling though) , anyway he had it last week and after taking them 3 times a day its settling down - he is attributing this episode to toppling over my boots inthemiddle of the night - anyway generally he feels eating celery helps , he even takes celery tablets seed things he got from health shop and since taking them for last 2 yrs his eposodes have been less so... Might be worth looking into.

My mum has gout - side effect of diuretics I think .

It's controlled by quite a low dose of allopurinol .

Standard procedure is to prescribe colchazine ( Sp ? ) when first starting allopurinol as starting or increasing dose of allopurinol can trigger a gout flare .

My mum had bad diarreah when took colchazine and since upping allopurinol she has refused colchazine .

Good luck - get GP to refer to rhuematalogist ( more ?? sp ) ,

My dh has it and he keeps it at bay by eating a banana and a can of diet coke every day. Theres something in them which helps. Phosphorous maybe? When he doesnt do this it comes back within days.

Apparently cherry juice( a certain kind of cherry) is very good for it. Try a health food shop
