how much for private sterilization?

have been referred by GP to be sterilised, but our local NHS hospital is not taking referrals due to lack of funding, GP said I may have to go privately... Has anyone been private and how much did it cost approx?

This sounds like a stupid policy. Would it cost them less to sterilise than give birth.

Can he refer you elsewhere? Isn;t it up to the PCT if they want to fund it?

Primary Care Trust. It's like the local NHS region that you belong to. And I believe they decide what is and isn't paid for. I wonder if you could appeal to them and explain that you could get pregnant if they don't give this to you, and what would that cost them?

just found out it cost between 1,500 and 2,500 to have it done privately and hwere I live there is no option as they won't do it on the NHs. So much!!!!!

That's a stupid policy. How many unwated pregnancies do you suppose they are paying to abort / birth / raise.

Gosh, I was mildly considering doing this, but I won't be paying that. Not a chance. Although, I thinkmy PCT will let me have it.

Do you think you could write the PCT and put forth an argument for why this would be a cost effective treatment.

I'd also write to your MP. That's ridiculous.

bagpuss, the NHS cannot force you to go private, if your local hospital is not taking referals, you should be referred to one who is. If they cannot meet your need they should refer you to a private hospital to have it done there on the NHS, There are hospitals which do this. dont take no for an answer!

of course it should be possible, bagpuss. this isn't some experimental procedure that isn't licensed. this is basic healthcare we're talking about here. why should you have to pay for it privately when others don't have to? we all pay taxes, after all.

Display a bit of personal atttention to new propects. When I was pregnant with DD, I wrote 2 nurseries enquiring about a place. They both replied with application that were no more personal than an apartment lease. And, I thought no way are you looking after my child. One of them even required I sign something authorising them to take her for medical attention but nowhere did it askk me what doctor or hospital to contact. And another wanted a deposit before they would tell me if they had a place available (and the deposit was non refundable). So, I decided that nurseries were not for us and we used a childminder until I hired a nanny.
