How painful is fitting of Mirena coil?

I was full-steam ahead about having one until someone told me the fitting was "awful" and that they put some sort of clamp on your cervix?! Sounds like torture!

Its not really painful, more uncomfortable. The 'clamp' they use is actually just similar to the one used when you have a smear. It sounds really scary! aparently after childbirth a womens cervix never completely closes so its not like they have to stretch it open to get the coil in. This is the reason that the mirena can only be given to women who have had children.

I experience period type pains for a few days after and the nurse explain to me that this normal because your uterus contracts a little to expell the coil which it sees as a foreign body. Its just exactly the same as when you have your period. This settled down after a few days.

i have a copper coil

they use a little instrument to open you crevix, just a wee bit, and there is a little 'nip' when they put the coil in.

i had some quite bad period pains for the next couple of days, but they were fine with a painkiller.

id say go for it

nailpolish · 01/03/2006 14:01

crevix??????????

cervix

satine · 01/03/2006 14:03

There is a 'nip' when they hold your cervix, but it only hurts for a few seconds. I had period type pains for about 6 hours afterwards.

Bibiboo · 01/03/2006 14:06

hurts? Can't they numb me? I don't want any pain! I've read good things about the mirena on here though so might tough it out. Grin

Thanks for being honest though

i found it more like a little sting than real pain, its honestly not that bad hun, i reccomend it to anyone, it stopped my periods completely!!!!!

Moomin · 01/03/2006 14:12

mine didn't hurt at all and i'm a real wimp. tip though - do have it fitted at a fp clinic or similar rather than your gp's surgery. this is because clinics are used to fitting them and are more skilled whereas gps/nurses at gp's don't do them every day.

Moomin · 01/03/2006 14:13

quick hijack while we're on the subject - i had mine fitted after dd1 but had it out after only 5 months to ttc for dd2. am fed up with the pill and am considering having it again. what have mood swings and bleeding been like for everyone who's got it?

fireflyfairy2 · 01/03/2006 14:14

My sister got froze when she got hers installed

lol @ installed...it sounds like a new TV lol

nailpolish · 01/03/2006 14:16

well moomin i have a copper coil and i think its so much better than the mirena - no moodiness, and my periods are quite heavy, but last only 2-3 days.

brassic · 01/03/2006 14:24

i did have a copper coil to begin with but bled more or less all the time so i was switched to mirena. from what i can remember i still had intermittent(sp?) bleeding but not very heavy. i'm on progesterone-only minipill at the moment and am on my period more than off! it's a pain in the proverbial

Rennii · 01/03/2006 16:51

I had the mirena coil fitted 4 and a half months ago. Very soon after I started experiencing IBS symtomps which has become worse. Anyone else have a similar experience?

jellyjelly · 01/03/2006 19:11

You can have it fitted if you havent had children or if you hadnt had a contractions ie had a section not a vaginal birth.

Naughtynoonoo · 01/03/2006 19:14

Mine was just like going for a smear

harrisey · 01/03/2006 19:25

Mine was a bit uncomfy but I wouldn't say it was sore. I love my mirena, no periods, no spots, no migraines --- wonderful!

jco · 01/03/2006 20:01

jellyjelly, i was told that the mirena coil couldn't be fitted in women who haven't given birth. Not other coils, their are fine its just the mirena

jco · 01/03/2006 20:02

i should add that it was my gyny doc who told me that

Kidstrack2 · 01/03/2006 20:08

hiya i quite like having my period everymonth, so i would like a coil that would allow me to still have periods, so a coil that doesn't release hormones if you like, which one is it?

chapsmum · 01/03/2006 20:10

if you have had a baby I would imagine it is not that painful, I had one pre ds1 and had to have 4 injections of prilocane into my cervix then they perforated my uterus, awch!!!

You could ask you GP for a prescription of ponstan efore you go, take it before you go in and it will really help with pain before and after.

mcmum · 01/03/2006 20:13

bibiboo

i had mirena fitted last january and it was just like a smear not painfull just uncomfortable and can't feel at all once in, i have tilted uterus and mine went in ok, dont worry about it but agree you cannot have mirena unless have had child.

morningpaper · 01/03/2006 20:16

mine was horrific but before kids

screamed and vomited and passed out

blood pressure dropped to 60/50 - had to get a doctor in

am HUGE wuss though and passed out having contact lenses fitted so probably not a good example

expatinscotland · 01/03/2006 20:19

I've been thru enough pain just having this baby with no pain relief. I chickened out and decided not to have a Mirena fitted.

mcmum · 01/03/2006 20:36

its not that bad {smile] im biggest softie eva Blush and i did it and i gave birth with paracetamol and entinox not that it did much good !

expatinscotland · 01/03/2006 20:37

no, thanks. i also don't like the idea of bleeding for months and then having to make another appointment and take time off work to have it out if i had side effects. at least w/a pill, you just stop taking it after the pill packet's finished.
