If it is really bad beetroot then you need to get to doctors sooner, I think. I had it horribly about three years ago - was weeing blood - it was agony. I did get some over the counter stuff - cystopurin - but it did no good.

Can you get an emergency appointment this afternoon?

otto · 28/02/2006 15:47

Cysteme, I think it's called. Boots also do a version. Cranberry juice is meant to me good too.

will they not diagnose it over the phone? My GP did when I last had cystitis, I just went and picked up the prescription afterwards. You'll have a hellish night if you don't start the antibiotics now. :(

Beetroot · 28/02/2006 15:55

calling now geekgirl

This may be contraversial but according to a nutritionist I know, cranberry juice isn't the best thing to drink, as it can irritate you even more. Cranberry capsules/tablets are better. But drink plenty of water to help flush the bugs out and avoid caffeine. The only thing that worked for me when I had it was antibiotics.

It's agony isn't it? Hope it clears up soon.

sazzlelou · 28/02/2006 16:16

Drink lukewarm water (it goes through your system quicker) with som bicarb of soda in it, this helps, also put some bicarb in the bath to help soothe stinging.
When I get it really bad however, i find the only thing that helps are antibiotics and laying in the bath until they kick in

unrine tested, infection diagnosed, trimethoprim given.

thanks a million

I only have one recommendation, BICARBONATE OF SODA it tastes like sh*te and makes you gag when you drink it but I used to get cystitis all the time when I was younger and it really does work, very quickly. Luckily I dont suffer with it any more but I can remember how horrible it was, it nearly drove me nuts. Another thing that can also help is to drink loads of lemon barley water as it helps to flush out your urinary system. Apparently drinking cranberry juice every day can also work as a deterrent.

Beetroot · 28/02/2006 21:02

i used to get cytitis regualrly before i had my kidney removed. and I cannot look at lemon barley water without puking.

I actually fel a little better so heres hoping the antibiotics are kicking in and i will be on the mend tomorrow
