operation on my shoulder last wednesday, hand now getting pins and needles

I had a decompression operation on my shoulder and a small part of the bone removed last wednesday, for the past couple of days my hand has been tingling, today its tingling and just at my wrist feels like its burning.
Shoulder is still really sore, I have a sling to wear all the time until my stitches come out in a weeks time, but even taking that off for a wee while doesn't make any difference.
Is this normal or do I need to phone the hospital?

Thanks

The nerves have probably been compressed so now they are released you feel them sort of "coming alive". It's not nice but hope it goes quickly for you. If you are concerned then there is no harm in calling.

Are you getting physio? If so tell them as its possible it could be neck related nerve pain (from wearing a sling maybe?). Otherwise I would call the hospital and ask for a review appointment. Good luck Smile

Thanks everyone, I ended up phoning NHS24 and they said they thought it sounded normal, but if I was worried they would see me.
I have an appointment this morning with my own Gp now because my shoulder feels like its on fire and because i cant take my dressing off to see how the wound looks until next Monday I dont know whats going on under there.
I have excersises from the physio and am waiting for my out patients appointment for them to come through.

Hi op,

I had a shoulder op - subacromial decompression - a couple of years back. I remember being told only to use the sling for a couple if days. Maybe try and leave it off, see if that helps.

It could be irritation to a nerve due to internal swelling, or an after effect of the nerve block they used.

Did you have keyhole surgery?

rhksmum · 02/07/2012 20:53

Yes had keyhole surgery.
Saw Gp this morning and I have an infection in one of the wounds, she took the dressing of and it looks like I was allergic to that which was causing the swelling, pain and rash. So now have antibiotics, antihistamins and cream for the rash and itching.

I only use the sling now if I'm going out, and once stitches have come out I have orders to throw it in the bin.
