Hello. I am quite new, usually just a lurking lurker but now it seems the time has come for me to start my first thread :)

I have had a hard, painful lump in my armpit for a few months now (don't think it has grown). It can move a bit, but not freely like a lump of fat, is very much in its place. I know I should have gone to the doctor's already and I know that you shouldn't google, but now I have convinced myself I have cancer of the lymphatic system, Hodgkins Lymphoma. I really need some reassurance/advice/experiences. I will go to the doctor soon.

Very unlikely. if you google any symptom you will always find you have cancer.

I am very experienced in cancer-googling. I've had an enlarged lymph node in my neck for 9 months now. I had an ultrasound test today. It's not cancer.

Just stop mucking about and go to the doctor.

mercibucket · 25/06/2012 23:38

It could easily just be a cyst - I have one of those. It moves around but not loads and hurts to be touched

That doesn't mean you shouldn't get it checked out, but I know you will, so just wanted to reassure you it's quite possibly harmless

Go to the doctor. Tomorrow. Any new lumps and bumps need to be investigated. You haven't always had it but it's there now? It's something that needs to be looked at.

WowOoo · 25/06/2012 23:39

Have these. Usually nothing to worry about.
Could be blocked sweat gland or cyst thing from shaving.

But if it's painful you need to explain to a Gp who can see it where and when it hurts. Have you been trying to squeeze it or is it when you move?

make a little appointment and stop worrying! Stay away from worse case scenario google until you get some facts!

goldensands · 25/06/2012 23:40

Yes, you are right grimble, I am being silly. S'pose I am just worrying as there is strong family history of cancer in family.

I will man up and see about a doctors appointment tomorrow. :)

P.s. I am a prolific googler - have self diagnosed all sorts ( I am now banned from googling!) the only way to put your mind at rest is to see your doc.

mercibucket · 25/06/2012 23:42

Sleep tight tonight and phone up tmrw - my GP was able to tell it was a cyst straight away so hopefully you'll have good news by tomorrow

Oh, thank you everybody, you are already making me feel a bit better.

WowOoo it is quite painful to touch and sometimes when I move my arm I am suddenly aware of it and it hurts a bit. Does that mean it's a cyst? What do you do with them?

OP posts:
grimblesmother · 25/06/2012 23:43

Oh god, yes lois. I've had mnd, lupus, various cancers, glandular fever (in a lighter moment) and of course the old inevitable brain tumour crops up regularly.

goldensands · 25/06/2012 23:44

me too loislane . I know I should steer well clear, but I just can't seem to restrain myself... Blush

Oh we're all as bad as each other, aren't we! Grin

OP posts:
grimblesmother · 25/06/2012 23:46

Oh, and you'll love this. With this neck-lump thing I convinced myself I was growing one of those cyst-thingies full of hair and teeth.

And that was dreamt up without googling!

goldensands · 25/06/2012 23:53

Ooooh, that was a good one grimble. Almost a shame that one wasn't true, there is a certain quarter of mumsnet who would go wild for photos of that.

I like to convince myself I have illnesses that explain my shortcomings e.g. Rickets to explain console myself to curiously bandy legs. Wink

Aw! ha! Glad it's not just me! I neeed parental controls on all the medical sites :/ Good luck at your docs. Hope the rickets clears up ;)

grimblesmother · 26/06/2012 13:10

Oh yes golden. Me? Fat? It's a gland thing, dontcha know.

Made that appt yet?

WowOoo · 26/06/2012 21:42

Possibly an infected gland, hair follicle or lymph node. ?
What did they say?
