Have noticed I have white areas on three of my toe nails and these areas seem a bit soft. I have seen stuff in the shops that you paint on your toe nails. Has anyone tried these and do they work?

Are you sure you haven't dropped something on them and damaged them?

Doesn't always work Sad.I've had a fungal infection for over 14 years. Nothing works.
OP, I'd go to your GP before you start self medicating.

Over the counter meds can work as long as you catch the infection early. Steer clear of all nail varnish, gently file away the very top layer of the nail, (don't use the nail file again) and apply Amorolfine sold as Curanail or Loceryl from your GP as a prescription. Apply once weekly until it disappears. If it's just White then you should be Ok, if it's yellow and involves the full depth of the nail it's harder to deal with.
You have to persevere and be careful to treat any new nail infections or any athletes foot. only wear nail varnish for 5 or 6 days before removing to prevent the infection growing under the varnish.

thanks for your help. I'm pretty sure it's a fungal infection as I had one 10 years ago. Think I will go to my GP for what you suggested, LIFG. I looked at some reviews of the various paint-on products you can get in Boots and they don't sound very promising. When I had it 10 years ago I took oral medication - Lamisil - which did the trick, but I had to take it for 6 months. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be given that now as I am on medication for rheumatoid arthritis.
