Any pharmacists/docs around who can suggest a medication for me, or anyone who can recommend a decongestant for someone taking HBP meds

because I really am at the end of my tether with this cattarh.

For 3 weeks now I've had a sore throat. It is so bad that I cna hardly swallow, and I also have what feels like cattarh stuck in the back of my throat and in my nasal cavity(sorry)

3 weeks ago i got antibiotics and steroids from the emergency GP at my mums, my asthma was really bad too.Peak flow was 150

I've had this sore throat/cattarh since then.

The doc keeps saying it's a "viral infection" and just to take paracetamol (or my co-codamol) and Ibuprofen (or ainkillers) for the sore throat, and that because I take meds for HBP, he won't give me any decongestant.I've been 3 times since the 6th June

He said "inhale menthol crystal twice a day. I am doing that and it's not helping. My throat hurts, my head hurts, I have snot, I am coughing green stuff up and I feel like crap, basically. I can't sleep at night because of it.

Is there anything I can do to shift the cattarh? Hmm

have you tried difflam spray for your sore throat? you can get it over the counter and I dont think it reacts with other meds (but I am not a doctor)

I am at the point now where I'll try anything

I do wonder if its the cattarh which is causing the sore throat

how about nasal sprays?
for otriven it doesn't say that it interacts with hbp medicines

Saltire · 22/06/2012 22:30

I might ask the doc for some Otrivine , thanks. I did ask at Tesco pharmacy but they said I couldn't take anyhting other than inhales or vicks.

have a look at these contra indications for otrivine:
You should not use this medicine if you are currently taking a type of medicine called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), or have taken one of these medicines in the last 14 days. MAOIs include the antidepressants phenelzine, tranylcypromine, isocarboxazid and moclobemide, and the anti-Parkinson's medicines selegiline and rasagiline. This is because the combination could cause a dangerous increase in blood pressure (hypertensive crisis).

I would get your throat looked at again and request a throat swab. Sounds like you may need more antibiotics.
