Loss of Senses of Smell & Taste for DAYS ON END!

I've been unwell for over a week. First excrutiating headache and general unwellness. That evolved more into a cold with tiredness etc. I went to the Dr last Mon about headaches. BUT the main problem for me is that I haven't been able to taste anything since I woke up on Thurs morning. I've lost my sense of taste before (never had one, ha ha!), I mean taste in my mouth of course. But maybe for part of a day or a whole day at most. NOT for four days. DH says I've got a brain dysfunction which really cheers me up. I've been taking painkillers and decongestant. I can't bear life without being able to taste food! I am going to patent it as my new Diet, forget stapling stomaches and sprouting beans, this will stop you eating for sure!
Any ideas why I have lost my sense of smell/taste for so long, if its likely to be anything more serious than cold-symptom-related, what I can do? I'll phone the Dr in the morning.

Definitely get it checked out with the GP. I tend to loose my sense of taste and smell when I have a severe sinus infection. Do you think it might be that?

foxinsocks · 26/02/2006 13:02

sinuses I imagine

I have a very low level sense of smell due to persistent sinus infections - I can only smell very strong smells and nothing else

Dh gets this. He cannot taste a thing, or smell anything either and it can last for days, then it will suddenly come back. He's had no answers from anyone as to what it might be either, we just put to down to one of those things.

Your sence of tast and smell are linked. Although you haver tase budws in you toungue your olfactory sence (smell and taste) is pretty much down to your nose. If your nose is stuffed or certain parts of your sinuses are blocked by mucous or swelling then you cannot smell and there for cannot tase. You should see your gp as a referral to ent would determine if your problem was simply snot or something else.

I had the bug nearly two and a half weeks ago - now feel fine apart from a cough BUT I have not had a sense of smell or taste for all of that time - I keep eating and drinking to see if it's come back but no.
I can't smell perfume or anything. Two and a half weeks is too long not to be able to taste anything...!

Oh no helliebean, I can't go on after just 4 days. I've never eaten so little! I noticed a year or so ago that colds etc had started to "go to my sinuses" and I didn't always realise it at first. I will phone Dr in the morning but hope it will just come back. I did have a happy hour this afternoon when I could taste the pizza I had, it was heaven.

Are you still having headaches?

gingernut · 26/02/2006 21:34

Sounds like it might be sinuitis. Are you still getting the headaches?

Davros · 28/02/2006 15:20

No headaches but head feels bunged up and smell/taste has come back but not very strong. I feel sure now its sinus-related. Didn't go to Dr yesterday as it was a choice between sitting there in the 2hours free time I had or lying on the couch.... and I am feeling much better but taking a long time to get back to normal.
