Broken finger/hand? am i right in thinking 'nothing can be done to treat it, just let it heel?'

Yesterday morning i hurt my finger and heard it 'crunch', its my little finger and is hurting low down (near the knuckle) and the side of my hand. I can move it (but it hurts) and theres no sign of swelling so not sure if its broken?

Am i right in thinking 'its not worth getting it checked', theres not much that can be done for a broken finger is their?

I think I'd have a broken finger set. Toes are just left to heal, but I think hands and fingers really need some attention. You'll really regret it of it heals funny and looks strange or you lose some use of it.

You should get it X-rayed. If it is an undisplaced fracture there is little they will do, but the position of the bones should be assessed to check they don't need realigning. If it is the metacarpal bone, they will put you in a cast or a splint.

HTH.

Thank you, so far it looks straight (my fingers are slightly wonky anyway), i will see how it feels in the morning, if it keeps me awake again tonight then i will get it checked out tomorrow (see if my gp can book me ion for x-ray rather than waiting all day in a&e). Luckily its on my right hand and i'm left handed so can still manage most things.

Go to a&e as if it needs treating they will do it at the time, instead of the X-ray being taken, the radiographer having to find a radiologist to report it and then you'll be sent round it a&e anyway where you'll need to wait to be seen! (assuming there is a fracture!)

Do you have a minor injuries unit around ? They can do xrays and splint, and usually waiting times are v short

Marne · 21/06/2012 21:31

I think we do have a minor injuries unit, i have an important meeting tomorrow morning so wont be able to go anywhere until after that. Hopfully it will feel better in the morning, i thought 'if something is broken you wouldn't be able to move it?', maybe its just a sprain? was just the cruching sound which is slightly worrying Grin.

Personally I would get a finger checked out because I would be concerned about it healing wonkily though I have ignored a broken toe in the past and it does look a bit odd now.
