My son used to have many ear infections, and we found that antibiotic ear drops were far more successful that oral antibiotics.

And we didn't go the antibiotic route without serious thought - before I get told off!!

My 14mnth old son has been on anibiotics frequently since he was 4 weeks old when he had viral meningitus. He has since had recurrant ear and chest infections and I am worried that his own immune system is shot at. I have discussed this with my Dr who although sympathetic did not really offer any alternatives. i too tried the homepathic route and had some success (it cured his recurrant oral thrush) but no joy with these infections. anyone out there with advice???

I remember reading somewhere on MN that some mums saw a dramatic reduction in the number of ear infections when they cut out milk from their kid's diet. I think organic is a good alternative as it doesn't contain nealry as much mucus?

Hi there. My ds is neraly 4 now, but he was plagued with ear infections from being very young untill about a year ago. He eventually had grommets in at 2 yrs.

As someone else has said, ear drops treated my ds much more effectively then oral anti b's, but I think you have to be under an ENT specialist to get these as GP's don't like prescribing them for kids.

Definatley think there is something in the milk thing, my ds didn't like soya milk so we put him on goats milk which dramatically cut down the number of infections. Some people swear by cranial osteopathy but I found it too exoensive.

HTH.

If it's 3rd infection in 5 weeks then how do you know it's not the same infection that wasn't cleared out properly in the first place? Maybe the antibiotics aren't right for the bacteria causing the problem?

Maybe it's a viral infection, which can't be treated cured with antibiotics, you have to wait it out? Supposedly the majority of ear infex are viral, but it takes an expensive test to find out if it is.

That said, the new Prevnar jab is supposed to help prevent ear infections & I would seriously look into getting it done privately & soon if I were you.
