TODDLER DRINKS 6 PINTS OF WATER A DAY.........?

7up · 25/02/2006 11:10

ok, ive posted before about my ds food intolerances but his water consumption ive got used too until the health visitor mentioned it at his check up. he's been tested for sugar related diabetes at 1 year old and was negative. hes now 16months old and drinks roughly 9oz water every hour throughout the day (this has been going on for months), he goes through roughly 8 sopping wet nappies a day and clothes.

he carries on drinking throughout the night, although not as much and i have to change wet nappies at least 3 times in the night.

is this normal?has anyone else got a massive water drinker

but aren't they full of rubbish? surely pureeing some seasonal fruit is better - and cheaper - than a jar? and you could be sure of what's in it.

7up · 25/02/2006 14:24

yea frayednot iwas 7777777!got the paed on 12th April but cant wait till then. ive asked the dietician to ring but she never did, found out since that shes pretty crap! is very knackering yes, i find im squeezing his nappy alnite to check its not soaked before it gets to his clothes.

bundle, so many foods, including fresh fruit give him severe stomach probs so weve stuck with the jars as paeditrician suggested it even tho is expensive, very frustrating. he ate half an apple on wednesday and was up screaming half the night

poor thing. can you use mild herbs/spices to add flavour? how is he with garlic?

7up · 25/02/2006 14:27

ooooh bundle, ive never tried garlic [scared face incase it gives him a belly ache face]its so scary trying something new with him hence the keeping him on the same food. prob still be on baby jars when hes 5

i've a friend who does have problems with garlic, but it may be worth a try..it has antibacterial/antiviral properties, as well as tasting yummy! (my girls love garlic bread )

7up · 25/02/2006 14:31

praps il try it. im off to drop him at mums so she can do the water and nappies for a few hours. ah the peace of it. thanks all.x

Ginger is supposed to be soothing to the stomach, you could add a touch of that to his food.

NannyL · 25/02/2006 15:11

Bo its NOT normal.... Drs asap

a few weeks ago i went through a REALLY thirsty phase... and was drinking about 4 litres a day (max)

the pharmacist told me this was VERY bad and to get to Drs ASAP or if it got worse to go to A&E dont forget im a full size adult (ok a small one, but an adult, NOT a todder)

anyway it settled down, only lasted a week and there was nothing wrong BUT you must get it checked.

It cant be normal and needs to be checked ASAP.... get an appt on monday PLEASE for the sake of your child

7up · 25/02/2006 15:48

thanks saadia and nannyL, ive just gone and got a specimen bottle from chemist to take a urine sample to docs on monday, although dont think itl show anything coz his wee is sooooo diluted it has no colour or smell and it showed negative before, but if i go prepared at least theyl know im worried and want it investigated further.

When you go, see if you can't hassle them to do a blood-based test maybe ? They will also be able to screen for much more...

nulnulcat · 25/02/2006 19:59

i have this problem with 2 yr old dd she is getting through over 3 litres of water a day currently waiting hospital appointment to have loads of tests done had 2 diabetes test and is going to have another one

7up · 25/02/2006 20:14

hi nulnulcat, sorry bout your dd aswell. my ds has been tested for diabetes, kidneys (hes got an orange tint to his skin)electrolytes (think that shows up something if they have diabetes insipidus)thyroid and more!all negative, its so confusing. have you got your apt yet?do you mean that shes already had 2 tests for diabetes that were negative?

thanks hubdee, i rekon the doc monday will say wait till paed apt in april for blood test. i will def take a urine sample tho. il do that tomoro, ive got the big bowl to run round after him once i take his nappy off!

My ds used to drink about 8 pints a day, the paedatrician said it could be something (cant remember the name) diabetes, not at all related to diabetes, it is given that name purely because of the symptoms, it is when a certain part of their brain is not registering that you have had enough to drink, and toddlers will usually grow out of it, my ds did grow out of it when he was aroun 3.5yrs.

7up · 25/02/2006 20:26

ah thanks waterfall so hopefully it might be the same as your ds and grow out of it, hope so, im dreading potty training, he'l be peeing everywhere at this rate. the nappies are getting very expensive too

nulnulcat · 25/02/2006 20:32

we havent had our appt yet as been on holiday am going to chase hospital up have had a letter saying what they are testing for but its all in med speak and not sure what they are on about! both diabetes test were urine tests and what you were saying earlier about it being so dilute makes sense i know one of the tests involves not letting her eat or drink overnight at all so they can do the test before she goes to sleep and when she wakes up, and yes potty training is a nightmare she keeps asking for her big girl pants and we do try but she is weeing every 5 mins and doesnt get to potty in time thank god for wooden floors!!

7up · 25/02/2006 20:50

aw bless her!i read on the internet that to test they withold water for many hours , think that was for the insipidus diabetes which is just drinking and peeing loads. my mums friends son had it and they gave him a nose spray to send signals to the brain that he wasnt thirsty. hope you get your apt soon and good luck, il keep an eye out for a thread in the coming months from you so i know how you got on

7up, def. press for a blood test. Urine tests are too unreliable (because sugar does not always leak into the urine at sufficient levels even when blood sugar is high). GP could do a finger prick test with a blood glucose monitor such as diabetics use all the time - blood sugar level above 9-10 mmol/l will indicate possible diabetes and then they can do further tests if necessary. I see he is gluten free. Coeliac disease and Type 1 diabetes are often linked. You must insist on a blood test now, don't be fobbed off with waiting till your paed appointment in April. Go armed with as much info as poss so he can't argue! The Diabetes UK site may be useful. Good luck.

7up · 25/02/2006 20:58

thanks gingernut, he did have a blood test for it a before xmas and it was negative. the other diabetes doesnt show up anything because it is just thirst and weeing. do you think he could have changed over a few months then

OP posts:
gingernut · 25/02/2006 21:05

Mmmm, seems unlikely then. Sounds like you need to be referred to a specialist of some sort. If it isn't diabetes (mellitus) then I think there must be something else, what you are describing definitely isn't normal. I don't know anything about diabetes insipidus I'm afraid.

7up · 25/02/2006 21:08

ive looked up diabetes insipidus and it is just having a huge thirst and then obviously peeing loads so it sounds like it and because its not diet related it doesnt show up on blood tests, il just have to see wot doc says, thanks anyway gingernut, interesting link you put on

OP posts:
gingernut · 25/02/2006 21:14

Yes, I've just been looking it up too. BTW, I meant unlikely to be diabetes mellitus if symptoms haven't changed since last test (and I presume they haven't). Diabetes UK site has a good explanation of diabetes insipidus and I agree this does seem to fit with what you've said. It's treatable at least. Hope you get some answers soon.

7up · 25/02/2006 21:23

thanks gingernut, thats a brill write up on it, i hadnt found one that good!clever you. theres another mum on here who hopefully will read that link as well, does sound like it to me just gota convince the docs now!cheers

OP posts:
gingernut · 25/02/2006 21:27

you're welcome

nulnulcat · 25/02/2006 21:40

ive just read that link and it was really useful thank you when i take dd for her tests i will definatley ask if that is one that they are doing but it does very much sound like they are if they are restricting her fluid intake overnight

7up · 25/02/2006 21:55

good luck nulnulcat, gona be hard when she cries for a drink and you have to refusei think id have to put that off till ds is talking and understands more if they sugges that to me
