Excessive Thirst and Bed Wetting??.......Advice Please!!

LillyPink · 21/02/2006 22:00

Can anyone give me any advice please?

DD is five nad has always had an above average thirst. She had a test for diabetes when she was two because of this but it was negative.

However, for the last three weeks or so, she has been drinking an awful lot in the evening, and weeing a lot too. She then wakes up about half an hour after going to bed to go to the loo, and sometimes wets the bed in the night a bit where she isn't awake properly to go to the loo.

Some nights she has been three or four times in the night. Previous to this she never woke to use the loo in the night, or very rarely.

I seperate dfrom her dad a few months ago and wondered if it was related to that, but surely that wouldnt explain the excessive thirst.

Could it be some sort of bladder infection?

Should I take her to the doctors?

thanks for reading.

I would definitely take her back to the doctors again, in case her symptoms are due to some sort of bladder infection or diabetes.

NannyL · 21/02/2006 22:08

yes go back to the Drs asap...

years ago this happend to a freind of our familys when he was 5... turned out he WAS diabetic

so get it ruled out AGAIN for our own peace of mind

LillyPink · 21/02/2006 22:13

Oh god, can't believe I haven't taken her to docs before now. She has always drunk a lot and I just put it down to being a phase at first.

Will book appointment tomorrow. Just scared myself by googling diabetes and UTIs. Fingers crossed it is not diabetes, but apparently untreated uti's can lead to kidney damage.

Feel like a bad mum

(put the bed wetting etc down to a 'phase')

mummytosteven · 21/02/2006 22:22

It may still, fingers crossed, just be a phase. No need to make yourself miserable with guilt over it, honestly. I remember having daytime accidents for no obvious reason at that age.

LillyPink · 21/02/2006 22:26

Thanks for easing my guilt a little!

Crossing fingers and everything else now!!!

Should we take a urine sample for the doctor when we go?

mummytosteven · 21/02/2006 22:27

Can't do any harm to take one along. Not really sure whether GP would prefer a erm fresh one or not...

LillyPink · 21/02/2006 22:30

I'll get a sample pot from chemists and take it along anyway. No doubt once we are there will the be the only time she can't go!!

Thanks!

lilly, my ds has had excessive thirst since about 4months old, now 16months. hes been tested for diabetes and kidney function and came back negative. doc said if it was diabetes he'd be drinking the bath water.

same as your lo wets the bed and goes through heaps of soggy nappies and wet clothes

LillyPink · 21/02/2006 22:50

thanks 7777. The thing that worries me most is when she wakes up she is gasping for a drink to aswell as needing the loo.

Would diabetes be quite fast to show itself, I wonder??

i dont know lilly, its very frustrating, ive tried to cut back ds water but he screams if he doesnt get it. since 7.30 tonight hes drank 20 oz of it, must admit it is a bad night tonight. hes been wet once and ive just changed his nappy again but i feel like im being a paranoid mum when i tell docs.

gingernut · 21/02/2006 22:57

Lilly, have a look at this thread which contains some info about symptoms of diabetes and about what might tests etc she might need if it does turn out to be diabetes. Hope not but it's as well to be prepared.

HTH.

Spidermama · 21/02/2006 23:01

Hi lillypink.
My ds who's five was diagnosed with diabetes just before christmas. You need to take a wee sample to the doctor.
I hope it's not. Feel free to CAt me any time though.

Spidermama · 21/02/2006 23:05

MY ds had also lost a fair bit of weight. The drinking and weeing thing had been going on for a few days and I thought either UTI or diabetes.

I'm keeping my figners crossed for you both. Like I say though, if it is diabetes and you want to talk, don't hesitate to contact me. The care for the condition is brilliant these days and there are so many positive advances.

Good luck.

LillyPink · 21/02/2006 23:11

Thanks Spidermama, have just read through your old thread.

how are day to day things with your ds now, it all sounds very bewildering. However, I musn't fret yet, until we have seen the doctor. DD dosn't seem to have any reaction to sugary food, or get a flushed face and has not lost any weight either. But I guess symptoms may differ from child to child...

Has she been eating anything new? My DS suffered from excessive thirst and I found out it was a food intolerance thing. When I cut some things out of his diet, he was no longer thirsty all the time. Just a left-field thought, and good luck with the dr's appointment.

Spidermama · 22/02/2006 16:18

Lillypink my ds was very thin and had low energy levels. When he was admitted the nurses said he was very well considering and that most diabetics are in a pretty bad way by the time they get to hospital to be diagnosed. So it sounds less and less likely that this will be the case for your dd (fingers crossed).

We've had some tough moments emotionally with ds, and at first the blood tests and injections were upsetting, but now he takes them in his stride.

The food intolerance suggestion sounds entirely plausable singersgirl. Especially if it has been going on for a long time. It's hard to check for food intolerances but well worth it.

Good luck and keep us posted.
