Anyone take Fluoxetine?

Have been taking this for 6 weeks as a final attempt to rid myself of PMT.

Has worked with regard to PMT but have noticed for the past week that I don't feel like eating much. This is not a problem as it would be an ideal way to lose weight but just wondered if this was normal.

Have not had any other side effects but wondered if anyone else had suppressed appetite from fluxoetine or maybe it could be due to something else.

SSRIs can cause changes in appetite - either an increase or a decrease - so it's possible that it's the fluoxetine that's causing it.

Feel like I am eating dinner just for the sake of it.

Mind you - haven't managed to rid myself of the chocolate cravings.

DP says I should just eat fruit and not snack on biscuits - my biggest downfall.

Hi , crazydazy. did you take it for pmt alone i.e not depression? i think i remember replying to a thread along that line a while ago (terrible memory)
i'm very interested to hear it has worked. I have terrible trouble with pmt myself.

The only thing you can do is try to eat reasonably healthily, so that whatever food you do eat is doing you good. The change in appetite may not last very long; I had it when I was taking Citalopram, and I think it lasted about three weeks (shame really, I could have done with a few pounds off )

i took it and I'm sre thre was something in the leaflet about appetite. have a look in the leaflet in the box of pills.

Can't find a leaflet in it - damn!!!

Am a worrier though and wondering if I am ill or it is the pills as haven't felt like this since before kids.

I've been on this for 18 years now (!) & loss of appetite is a common side-effect. Not for me, unfortunately. The only side-effect I've had is loss of libido.

festiveface - yes it has worked for the PMT, was very strange as I always know when I am going to come on because I feel so irritable and generally low but suddenly it just appeared this month and I looked at the calendar and realised it was the right time but had had no symptoms at all, not even bloating.

Don't normally look at the calendar as I know I am due because of the PMT symptoms.

I have taken it in the past (for depression) but my appetite was really bad when I started taking it anyway so have no idea, sorry. Did lower my sex drive though

I'm sure I read that it could be used for bulimia when I was on it first time round. This time taking it has coincided with trying to lose a lot of weight and I've found the weight loss really easy so far so maybe it is helping.

My god 18 years Sansouci I have been afraid cos I've been taking it 6 weeks!!! The GP reassured me that I wouldn't become dependent on it as it was not addictive.

i have had one g.p say it is addictive and one that says it isn't. I think you have to come off them slowly though.

Northender - well thats great news for me then, shall not worry that I don't want to each much and look forward to my svelte sexy body

Haven't noticed a great loss of libido but have been more tired.

No, it's not addictive. I tried so many before Prozac came on the market. I suffer from chronic depression. An illness like any other except it has a stigma attached so no-one knows outside the family except bf... & MN!

Yes the GP did tell me not to suddenly stop taking them.

Yep just googled it and sure enough it can be used (in higher doses I think) to treat bulimia and obsessive compulsive disorder.

Was worried when the GP first suggested taking prozac as I have never suffered with depression but it has been such a great relief from the PMT symptoms and glad I did now, nothing else worked had tried primrose oil and vit B6.

crazydazy, MrMiaou is on Fluoxetine and I've just got a PIL out of his box. Under side effects it lists nausea and diarrhoea as possible short-term side effects, and says that over the long term you may lose a little weight.

MrMiaou says his appetite has not changed one bit!

Make sure you don't drink whilst on fluoxetine - I presume you know what happened to him just before Christmas...

Well was drinking the other weekend and although I was okay on the night and didn't feel too drunk, had a terrible hangover which lasted all day.

IIRC Mr. Miaou had recently started Prozac, went to works Xmas do, had some alcohol, then next thing he remembered was being caught by the police trying to drive his car in the car park. He hadn't intended to drive at all that night, but the combination of the Prozac and the alcohol seemed to cause him to behave in an uncharacteristic way.

I wouldn't say - don't drink alcohol at all - but I would be very very careful with combinging alcohol and any SSRI antidepressant - as you may react differently to alcohol when on Prozac than you might expect - get drunker more quickly more example. also as alcohol is rather a depressant, it defeats the object of taking an Anti-depressant if you drink quite a lot of alcohol!

I must admit that I never get plastered. Hate the feeling. My limit is a couple of glasses of wine or a vodkatonic.

Well that's nice for you sansouci. However dh lost his driving licence as a result of being on fluoxetine and having a few drinks and "blacking out" - he did not intend to drive (was supposed to be staying over in a hotel) but ended up trying to reverse the car out of the hotel car park...he has no recollection of what happened at all. On asking around we found a few cases of this happening.

The PIL says this: "Antidepressants can affect your judgement or co-ordination ...this applies to a greater extent if alcohol is taken. It is therefore recommended that you avoid drinking alcohol during your treatment."

(It didn't say this on the packet we had at the time, otherwise he wouldn't have had anything to drink).

I am not trying to scare you crazydazy - just thought it is worth being aware.
