Has anybody tried giving up using shampoo?

I have heard several times that if you stop using shampoo, your hair adjusts and becomes less greasy, and that the natural oils give it shine and it looks more healthier. Has anyone tried this? Do you just rinse it in water instead? And how long does it take to stop looking hideously greasy?

LeahE I saw that program as well.. (was it really that long ago.. seems like yesterday
didn't she say for the first few months that she smelt like a sheep!!
Your right it did look really glossy after a few months

I've given up washing completely, all I do is shake the dandruff and bits of food out of my hair once a week and scrape myself with the fish-slice from the kitchen to get all the visible muck off... hmm maybe I should wash it before I put it back in the drawer next time, nevermind...

Sleepy Jess

Thank God someone did.

FrannyandZooey · 21/02/2006 11:46

Ok I can't stand wearing a turban for 3 months. Cod what does "blookcs" mean? Oh, light has just dawned actually. Well I am going to try it for a bit and see if I smell.

Actually that link is cringeworthy, I especially like the way she says poo instead of shampoo, and compares it to breastfeeding??? However it does tell you how to do it.

Am now looking for Jerry Hall links - her hair is great.

franny, I once didnt wash my hair for around 6 weeks (suffering from depression). I did brush it though! It didnt really adjust, I mean it just looked pretty greasy. I wouldnt try it again!

harpsichordcarrier · 21/02/2006 12:52

"Ready to make the change? Sure! Don?t be afraid to go no 'poo. You know how to do it! Enjoy the journey ? you?re on your way to a healthier you!

yeah - best put your copyright symbol on there Christi, just in case we want to pass this off as our own work dear.

and 'poo is short for champagne. iirc.

PrettyCandles · 21/02/2006 12:52

I asked this question ages ago, and the consensus was "don't!"
this thread

FrannyandZooey · 21/02/2006 12:53

Blimey, a whole web community devoted to not washing their hair

i had a [male] friend who did this, but he also got dreadlocks. it was horrible and smelly. However, i have discovered just washing my face with water and nothing else stops my skin drying out and funnily enough stops me getting spots too. My skin is much better since i stopped using anything on it.

harpsichordcarrier · 21/02/2006 13:01

hair absorbs smells though doesn't it? smoke and grease etc

FrannyandZooey · 21/02/2006 13:03

Yes but I am going to wash it, HC, just not use shampoo.

However the whole idea is rapidly losing its appeal thanks to that site....

lol at "dont be afraid to go no poo!"

FrannyandZooey · 21/02/2006 13:12

I know, I thought it was quite a cool idea until I read some stuff on the forum. They have their own set of acronyms based on not shampooing their hair, and they have signatures on their posts saying things like "No 'Poo since June 03, Kumquat Conditioner and Vinegar Rinse Only"

Greensleeves · 21/02/2006 13:37

I heard it takes six months for your hair to start balancing its own oils... you are meant to brush it/comb it to stop dreadlocks forming, but not wash it in anything. It's recommended that you invest in a hat for the first six months

FrannyandZooey · 21/02/2006 13:49

Ok well I think I may abandon this one. My next question is, what about not cleaning your teeth? The enamel is meant to be self-cleaning and I am sure the plaque would rebalance itself after a few months....

OK, forget it
