I went to the dentist yesterday and have an infection in a developing wisdom tooth. It hurts like hell. I'm on my second day of anti biotics .the left side of my face is swollen and I have the most horrendous headache. Eating is painful and difficult as I can hardly open my mouth. I'm not a wimp and don't usually complain. Went to work with loads of paracetamol. I have a do on Saturday that I've been looking forward to for months and if I feel like I do now I just won't be able to go. Gutted.
Tell me it's going to stop soon.

It should stop soon as ABs kick in:)

FanjoForTheMammasaurus · 24/05/2012 20:44

Sorry I meant soon, as they kick in. (should be starting to ease up soon, if not I would ask for other antibiotics)

usualsuspect · 24/05/2012 20:44

Nurofen is better than paracetamol , or co codamol

BillyBollyBandy · 24/05/2012 20:45

Get some ice underneath where the pain is if lower jaw, or next to the pain if upper jaw. It takes the heat out of the infection. Take some ibruprofen which is much for effective for dental pain.

drywhiteplease · 24/05/2012 20:51

Which pain killers can I mix?
Dentist said if it happens again (this is second time but first time it cleared without ABs , not as severe) I might have to have the partially erupted wisdom tooth out under local at hospital. This is my ultimate nightmare (had two CCs no prob!).... But this is seriously scary and I'm tough usually.
Will try ice now billy

You can take ibuprofen and paracetamol/cocodamol

FanjoForTheMammasaurus · 24/05/2012 20:53

Are you trying salt watr rinses?

FanjoForTheMammasaurus · 24/05/2012 20:53

Is the infection in gum around tooth ( pericoronitis). Salt water rinses and corsodyl mouthwash can help that a bit

drywhiteplease · 24/05/2012 20:56

Dentist did suggest that fanjo is it better than mouth wash that has antibacterial in?
You lot are really brilliant....wish I'd asked for your help sooner.
My rugby son has some ibuprofen......do I take usual dose of paracetamol win normal dose of ibuprofen?

OP posts:
FanjoForTheMammasaurus · 24/05/2012 20:58

I would try the salt water, it is antibacterial and soothes the inflammation. Yes you can take normal does of both :)

FanjoForTheMammasaurus · 24/05/2012 20:58

Also get some corsodyl too

BillyBollyBandy · 24/05/2012 21:00

Yes normal dose of both - try and take 2 hours apart

Hot water with salt rinse - as hot as you can stand the water

You should be able to avoid having it taken out if it is due to a partial eruption as by it's very nature it will go away

Can you tell I have had these infections myself Smile

drywhiteplease · 24/05/2012 21:06

Ok have frozen sweet corn on face (in bag!)
Have taken ibuprofen just now ( 2 hrs after paracetamol.....knew I should have bought neurofen!)
Will do (lo?)salt v hot mouth wash in a min.

Any more tips welcome.

Oil of Cloves numbs the area or good old Bonjela

drywhiteplease · 24/05/2012 21:25

The ice (sweet corn) has worked a dream!

BillyBollyBandy · 24/05/2012 21:33

Fab!

drywhiteplease · 25/05/2012 18:16

Tooth ache update.
No improvement. Went back to dentist. 48hrs of penicillin hasn't improved matters. He poked about at my sore bit, took an x ray and prescribed metronidazole to take with the penicillin. Also bought bonjela and am mixing paracetamol and ibuprofen and salt washes.
Was told absolutely no booze tomorrow which I can live with.
I have 24 hrs to get better.
More ice tonight I think.

Metronidazole should definitely help.

redglow · 25/05/2012 20:27

This happened to me the metronidazole worked within 24 hours. Think you will be able to go out tomorrow night, my sympathy is with you I would rather give birth than have toothache.

JuliaScurr · 25/05/2012 20:32

Hope you're ok
have fun tomorrow
