hi can anyone help, my Lo who is virtually 1 has had a sticky eye since birth. ive tried cleaning it with boiling water, ointment creams, drops, etc all prescribed by the docs. nothing has helped the only time it has been ok ish is when he has been on antibiotics for something else. ive been told different things by the docs one minute its conjuntivitus, next its a blocked tearduct. is there anything else i can try, perhaps something alternative. dont want to go down the route of him having a little op just yet would like to try something else. any advice much appreciated xxxx

Did you ever try breast milk?

As I couldn't breast feed I put a couple of drops of formula milk in dd eye when this happens and it always clears up - dont know why but it does!

Breast milk is fab. Has lots of antibodies in. Not sure why formula milk would work though....[puzzled emoticon]

I believe you can massage gently around the tearducts/eyes to help with this kind of thing but i dont know enough about it. Perhaps you can ask on here.

DD has same problem - and has done since birth. Have tried bathing, breastmilk, massaging and nothing has worked. Since thurs have been applying antibiotic drops as I'm so fed up with it. Think it is Fucithalmic (prescription). Hoping it works but will keep you posted. Have had same advice - infection, blocked ducts, etc etc..... Wish they would get their act together.

My dd3 (18 months) has had this since birth and I also don't want to go for surgery yet. It usually only gets very sticky if she has a cold and as I'm still b/feeding I drop a few drops of milk in her eye which works well. I think keeping it clean is the only treatment really. How long do you think you'll wait before opting for the op?

My dd has also had this.

She was referred to the hospital where they discharged her straight away because they couldn't see anyhting wrong.
1 day later she got another infection so she was referred back again.

They said that she would eventually "grow out of it" and she has.

They also mentioned an op but said at this age it is too risky especially on such a delicate area.

She has just turned 2.

I do have a good supply of saline solution in the cupboard which a nurse at your Gp's may give you. Thats very good for cleaning the eye.

hiya thanks for your advice mums,

Nbg when ds was 5 days old took him to hospital as he had developed a rash but they werent concerend with that rather his eye. they took some swabs and never got back to us, which they said meant it wasn't anything to worry about, supposedly.

am v dubious about the whole op thing, as he is only 1 (today!). Have made another docs appt for tues so will see what they say again. spoke to someone at his party yesterday who recommended using cooled chamomile tea to clean the area as this worked with her dd.

yes did try breastmilk when i was breastfeeding, did so on many an occasion but personally found this didnt work.

am interested in trying something alternative rather than keep putting him on antibiotic creams/ointments.

have just trained as a massage therapist so will try massaging gently around his eyes too.

will keep you posted
