Should I feel guilty over 1 crafty cigarette a day?

I think it does let me unwind after a day of running around and I smoke outside, but I wouldn't say I have a real addiction as it literally is 1 a day. Should I quit or not give it further thought?

My friends mother had one or two cigarettes a day for 50 odd years - that's a lot of cigarettes over time, she died last year of lung cancer :(

AceOfBase · 14/05/2012 14:16

Why bother with one a day if you don't need it? Surely its better just to quit and save your money than have 1 each day. It doesn't really make sense.

LumpyLatimer · 14/05/2012 14:16

Nope.

If you need to unwind there are less harnful ways to relax.

The simple fact is- if you cannot give this up easily then you are addicted. And I assume- though don't know- that 1 fag will soon become 2 or more....

picnicbasketcase · 14/05/2012 16:17

No idea if you are physically addicted on one a day, but it sounds like a psychological dependence if you feel you have to one to relax. If you didn't have one today, would you miss it a lot?

Madsometimes · 14/05/2012 17:32

Yep, I think you should, but I'm probably the wrong person to answer this. If you have a strong constitution, then you should be thankful for it, and not jeopardise it by smoking. If not for yourself, then for your children.

I told a good friend this, she gave up smoking, and curses me for every pound that is difficult to shift (she is not fat btw).

Madsometimes · 14/05/2012 17:35

Apologies if my answer was a bit like an AIBU reply.

fuckarama · 14/05/2012 17:40

You're a grown up.

Why would you need to feel guilty?

You should quit. It is an addiction. Smoking is bad for you. If anything with your health goes wrong. Wouldn't it be awful to look back and wish that you didn't.
You will feel better for never smoking again, I say this as a person who smoked for almost 20 years. I stopped 5 years ago. I have two very young children. I do sometimes wake up in absolute fear that I can not take back those 20 selfless years. If I could, I would. I wish I hadn't smoked. I was so arrogant to think that smoking isn't dangerous and it wouldn't impact anyone else. It is and in my case it does. There are better things to spend your time doing and much better ways to relax.

Sorry, you did ask...

upsidewide · 15/05/2012 03:22

oops I suppose they were 20 selfish years ... not selfless ... depending on which way you look at it.

beansmum · 15/05/2012 03:25

Is it really just 1 a day? Not that I think you're lying, but when I used to smoke '1 a day' it was 1 on a normal day, a few on a really stressful day and a whole pack when I was with people who smoke. That adds up to LOADS over a year. Which is not good for your health, plus it stinks and costs money that could be better spent on pies. Or whatever. I like pies.

RomyMadison · 15/05/2012 09:05

Yeah thanks ladies for your opinion and beansmum it is literally 1 cigarette a day. I sort of think about it as if I'm not doing any harm at all its 1 cigarette outside and it relaxes me but obviously it has to be causing damage somewhere.

If you delude yourself that only 1 dos no harm, then why don't you google and find out exactly what "just 1" does to your body?

The fact that 1 fag has an effect on you also means that it has its downside. You can't have the " benefits" without the risks.
