DS1's new teeth are coming through but the baby teeth are still there

He's 6. The two bottom front teeth are coming through about 1/5cm behind the baby teeth. The baby teeth are not wobbly even though one of the new teeth is about 1cm through and the other one is just peeping through.

Has anyone seen this before? Should I be worried? I'll call the dentist tomorrow and ask her to check them out but I'd be really grateful if anyone can reassure me.

It's not bothering him at all but I have visions of him with a faceful of teeth, like a shark

Very common. Has happend to both of my two. I checked it with the dentist and he said not to worry

There is a girl in my class at school, she also has her new teeth coming through behind her baby teeth. From what I can see, it is causing her big teeth to grow inwards. I have no idea if her mum has been to the dentist about it but I think they may need to be removed. She is 6 years too.

Mrs D yes, my DD has something similar - she has lost 2 teeth at the botom, but she needs to lose another 2 to let these big ones thru and so far they're not budging!

I posted about it a while back and the feedback was mixed, some said that dentists would leave the baby teeth to come out on their own, whilst others said dentists may remove the baby teeth.

We have an appt at the dentist next week. We'll see then.

Thanks for the replies.

I found your thread, Feistybird - did you ever hear about Enid's child? I'll be interested to hear how your DD gets on next week. I guess in the light of these responses I'll hold off going to the dentist until after half term.

I knew I'd get some reassurance if I posted on mumsnet

I wouldn't worry about it. That's what happened to dd. Then one of the baby teeth fell (she swallowed it!!) and after 8 months, the second one fell too. The new teeth which had come out before the baby ones fell are now slowly moving to the front. Both my parents are dentists (retired) and said that was fine, as teeth do move a lot for years. It does look weird though for a while.... But I prefer it to having a big gap, must make chewing easier!

Yup. This happened with my dd and I was worried. The others grew to full size before the old ones finally fell out. I asked a dentist friend to look at them and she said it was perfectly normal.

This is currently going on in our house with my 5 yo DS! It started with the teethon the bottom. He did have a wiggly tooth but it was on the top. (After a while the non wiggly tooth just popped out wasn't wiggly first just came out when he was eating. I think some food got lodged and pushed it forward.) When I took him to the dentist he said this was fairly common and that once the big teeth had come through and the small ones were gone the tongue would push them forward into their natural place. It looks a bit odd but I've been assured it's nothing to worry about!

I think this is a common problem. My poor son had both milk teeth and adult teeth competing for the same space! He had such overcrowding of teeth the dentist referred him to an orthodontist. He suggested that he had 4 milk teeth removed electively so as to make space for the big 'uns. This won't be the case for everyone though.

jalopy · 16/02/2006 09:11

Forgot to add that he's 8. Don't think they do this for younger ones.

do take it seriously. I had some late adult teeth and refused to let the baby teeth be taken out (I was 13 or so). the result is two big teeth growing at funny angles
