DS not well what would you do?

We have all had a virus ds 23 months now has it, he looks awful - red eyes, temp of 38.8 after calpol at 2.30 His skin on his arms, hands and legs are mottled. He is spending most of his time asleep. He saw practice nurse this morning as he had guey eyes but they wouldn't give him anything as the whites of his eyes were not red.

But now what should i do as he is worse

give him some nurofen and some fluids and let him sleep

because you sound worried, were i you i'd go to the out of hours surgery - there will be an ans msg on your docs phone to say where.

as for nurofen he's eaten nothing so will upset his tummy

i know its crap, and somehow they are always dead perky when you get them there. but then its worth it.

Everyone feels worse in the evening and temperatures always go up in the evening too - even in well people. You know the course the illness takes, can you not hang on in there for tonight and see how he is tomorrow? Also, ifhe had Calpol at 2:30, he can have some more at 6:30. That might make him more comfortable for the night.

My sympathies. Dd had this for a week and is still quite tired.

Definitely. You might then find he sleeps well past the next four hours and so then you will be able to give him some more without over-dosing him.

calpol stabilises a temp .. ibuprofen brings it down

does he really have that sensitive a stomach .. it has never bothered either of mine on an empty stomach ..but different kids I suppose

dd had a stonking temp yesterday. Dr said to put them in a warm bath, get them all wet, hair and all, and them take them out, lay them on a towel and let them dry off like that, will bring temp down apparently..

I would put him in bath but he just soooo lathargic it would be cruel. Going to give him some nurofen now as he has had a little milk. Nurofen is notorious for causing stomach upset in adults let alone kids. Should never be taken on empty stomach

long way to go, I think you should prob have a dr look at him.
Mottled hands and legs with a temp is not a good sign.
Neurofen will not upset his tummy if he's not eaten, the infant formulation is mild and is in a syrup.
If he is very sleepy I would not be inclined to do the bath thing, (no offence to the dr you saw allie I'm sure in your circumstances it was appropriate) but if you bring a wee ones temp down too quickly you can actually cause more problems.
Tepid sponging to his face and apply cool compresees to the wrist over where you would take a pulse.
If you feel he is getting worse and his colour does not improve, please take him to hosp or dr asap!

long way to go, it is a different formulation for kids, it is more important that you bring his temp down, if he is that unwell, please dont be afraid to give him neurofen.
It would be the first thing they would do if you took him to hosp (providing he's not allergic)

sorry, chap is helping me type, strip him down to the nappy/pants cover him with a sheet and put a fan over him.
Please take him to dr if hes not improving, lethargic baby with mottled hand/legs really is not a healthy one, do not be afraid of getting a dr to see him, they would rather re-assure an anxious mum than deal with a very sick child from a mum who was to scared to go to hosp.

Dd had mottled skin when she had a UTIaged 18mths. On mentioning this along with her other symptoms we were advised to take her to A&E. We were seen within minutes because of the appearance of her skin, so agree with cm - def have a Dr look at him. Also agree nurofen better for reducing temp for longer.

not ringing nhs direct they take hours to get back to you
will look at his skin again in a mo when i take his temp

Just to intervene - Longwaytogo, please don't waste time answering this but if anyone else could, I would be grateful - what does mottled skin indicate? Why is it such a serious sign?

longwaytogo if you phone nhs 24 and describe what you've put on heree they would send you to a and e.

It obviously difficicult and I would not attempt to diagnose on lie but it sound from what you described that your ds is not wee at all, please do not be afraid to seek medical attenditon for her.

I will answer that, mottled dkin is a sign of pour perfusion IE the skin does not have an adequate oxygen supply to keep it pink. This can happen normally during the cold, but it can also happen during illness, and if she has a temp and is mottled she really needs ot be seen

sorry to butt in but whats the significance of the mottled skin?
ds1 had mottled skin at weekend but he only had a cold.
