hello, last weekend i got up for a wee in the middle of the night and I realised I wasnt seeing hardly anything with my left eye, it was like i had a thin peice of fabric over my eye and if I concentrated really hard I could just about make out light (ie my sons nightlight). I tried not to overthink it but it hasppened again thursday night. I got in touch with the optition on friday and they saw me today.

My right eye prescription hasnt changed but my left eye is significantly worse than I can ever remember it being. They did several tests and I couldnt focus properly on the green light I was supposed to be looking at. They took pictures of the back of my eye and found several lesions on the black mass (cant remember the name think it started with an m) at the back of my eye, when she zoomed in the picture you could see light patches on it.

The optician referred me to a specialist and I am going tomo morning so not long to wait.

Anyone have any idea what this may be? I dont mind if its bad, I would like to have an idea what im in for tomo, I will be on my own and so if anyone can give me some info I would be really greatful.

How old are you? as in, age range.

frownyface · 07/05/2012 21:26

Bump - poor you! No idea but hope you are ok. Lesions sounds like damage to the eye? Have you had any eye related accidents lately?

frownyface · 07/05/2012 21:28

Im feeling pretty nervous, no whirliwig, no accidents just the conjunctivitus

I wrote a long post. but then deleted it.

take a good friend with you tomorrow. a dp or dh if you have one.

hopefully it will be nothing uch and sort itself out fairly soon. :) what sort of specialist are you seeing?

frownyface · 07/05/2012 21:35

how annoying extreme, thanku for taking the time to reply anyway :)

Im going to an eye clinic at our local eye hospital, the optition has given me a letter to give them. I have read the letter but the only thing I could understand was the bit about having trouble focussing and being seen urgently.

Its the urgent part that worries me!

I will take my husband, thanks for the advice

extremestupidity · 07/05/2012 21:39

urgent things can happen for one of two reasons.

  1. its pretty bad and if they dont do something soon, something even worse can happen.
  2. its bad, not necessarily very bad, but they can do something soon which will make it better immediately.

so for example, breast lumps are always treated like cancer and seen within two weeks, because breast cancer is something that can be cured, whilst there are other diseases that are actually far far worse, but because they cant be cured, there is no point whatsoever in having an urgent appointment for. so whatever it is that you have, its quite likely that something can be done about it and things be made better.

hope that makes sense.

frownyface · 07/05/2012 21:42

Thankyou extreme I think! :)

try not to overthink - i used to work in eyes (did 10 years) its good that you have been referred straight away.

had it been something immediately sight threatening, (like a detached retina) you would have been sent to hospital immediately.

it sounds like you need to be seen urgently, but try not to panic. Take your DH with you, take a list of questions, and pop a notepad and pen in your bag to jot down what the consultant says, and get their name and tel number of the dept in case you have questions later.

good luck.

thankyou for the advice I do appreciate it :)

Was it the macular they mentioned?

frownyface · 08/05/2012 07:08

Do you generally have problems with your central vision?

frownyface · 08/05/2012 07:43

erm, im short sighted and have astigmatism, i dont really understand the question sorry. Up to now I have used contact lenses and glasses, this is the first time my left eye has had problems like this. Sorry mum of one, Im not sure if that answers ur question or not.

I had perfect eyesight all my life. Out of the blue it started to get foggy, thought I'd scratched my eye. Got so bad in left eye I could make out shadows. Got to opticians needed cataract surgery a year later needed cataract surgery on right eye. I now have 20/20 vision but just wanted you to know there is so much that can be done nowadays it's unreal. My eyesight is due to being type1 diabetic but I'm only 39 so losing my sight knocked the wind out of me.
Good luck with the specialist I'm sure all will work out well as I know from above experience how much I value my sight. I thought I was blind and couldn't cope with that but hey I'm all good.
Xx

Hello Brisvagas thanku for sharing your experience, I feel quite frightened at the mo so its good to hear what has happened to others.Wotnow thankyou for asking after me :)

Today has been a bit of a nothing day, the triage nurse asked about my symptoms and I have to wait til thursday to see the specialist. I have realised that 90% of my sight is going through my right eye, I have to consciously think about using my left. Its quite scary, it somehow didnt seem quite so bad when it was just happening at night time but realising that actually its happening all day every day is scary.

My eyesight is actually ok through my left eye with my glasses on, the issue is more that for some reason Im not using it, so that coupled with the lesions is pretty frightening :(

How did it go today? Quite a self interested question from me because I have a hospital eye check on Friday for temporary sight loss in one eye.

frownyface · 08/05/2012 21:33

madsometimes, thats ok :) will know more on thurs and il post again then, I hope it works out ok for you

Madsometimes · 08/05/2012 21:43

I'm sorry you didn't get to see the specialist today, it's a bit rubbish hanging on until Thursday. I'm a bit worried that the opthamologist will give me a driving ban, and I'm nervous about having drops in my eyes because I'm a total wuss Blush.

All the best for Thursday.
