hello, last weekend i got up for a wee in the middle of the night and I realised I wasnt seeing hardly anything with my left eye, it was like i had a thin peice of fabric over my eye and if I concentrated really hard I could just about make out light (ie my sons nightlight). I tried not to overthink it but it hasppened again thursday night. I got in touch with the optition on friday and they saw me today.

My right eye prescription hasnt changed but my left eye is significantly worse than I can ever remember it being. They did several tests and I couldnt focus properly on the green light I was supposed to be looking at. They took pictures of the back of my eye and found several lesions on the black mass (cant remember the name think it started with an m) at the back of my eye, when she zoomed in the picture you could see light patches on it.

The optician referred me to a specialist and I am going tomo morning so not long to wait.

Anyone have any idea what this may be? I dont mind if its bad, I would like to have an idea what im in for tomo, I will be on my own and so if anyone can give me some info I would be really greatful.

thanks madsometimes, drops are horrible (esp cold ones that have been stored in the fridge), but if it means you will get to keep driving that can only be a good thing :) fingers crossed for you

I think my eyesight is fine. The question is whether the sight loss is caused by migraine or TIA. It only lasts for minutes and is one eye. I don't know if my doctors are worrywarts or if I'm in denial!

frownyface · 08/05/2012 22:15

probably a bit of both mad! Grin

let us know how you get on, i was referred for flashing lights and poss retinal detachment last week, had a follow up appointment today and have an epiretinal membrane.

not sure if what you have is similar.

good luck.

catclarks · 08/05/2012 22:19

frowny, I saw your post last night and have been following it today. I have an eye condition which started with lesions over my macula. It started 12 years ago and I have flare ups every so often. It's just in one eye (much like yourself I assume) and I have just got used to it. In fact, I rarely notice it now unless something gets in the way of my good eye.

As for the eye drops, I am a total wuss and they don't get any easier. The nurses now know to give me a comfort tissue Grin Blush

Be thinking about you on Thursday.

frownyface · 08/05/2012 22:22

oooh cats mamma that sounds much more interesting than lesions on my macular what does that mean and how is it being treated? Are you ok?

frownyface · 08/05/2012 22:25

Thankyou catclarks, I think its just as soon as you have probs with your eyes you cant help but panic so its good to hear your positive story :) Do you take drops regularly as part of your treatment? (dont mind me im pretty nosy)

Catsmamma · 08/05/2012 22:29

frowny...yes I am fine

the gist of it is that the jelly in my eye (vitreous) is degrading, (happens to everyone) and as it does it can pull on the retina....that is why i got the flashing lights and went off to the optician who referred me to the eye clinic.

If it continues to pull on the retina it can make a hole or a tear or you get a layer (like a see through scab) called an epiretinal membrane.

I had an eye thing in november last year which was diagnosed as a post vitreous detachment, ( again a jelly thing) but this recent episode was a little more dramatic with the flashing lights, drop in vision and a hazy wrinkly blur.

it should resolve itself but there are treatments available if it progresses and i have to watch out for any changes.

it also doesn't help that i am dreadfully short sighted which on its own really bumps up the chances of a retinal detachment.

catclarks · 08/05/2012 22:33

That's ok, I was the nosiest person around when I was diagnosed. Fire away with the questions! I know what you mean about the panic setting in. Initially I was just relieved that it wasn't a brain tumour which the gp had me thinking it was.

I don't take anything for it. To be honest, there's not a huge amount that they can do. I have had various treatments when I'm in the midst of a flare up and some of the sight has come back but I mainly rely on my peripheral vision in my bad eye now. The brain is an amazing thing, and as I mentioned before I don't tend to notice it on a day to day basis.

frownyface · 08/05/2012 22:35

catsmamma im sorry Im didnt intend to make light of your situation.

It sounds quite frightening, I hope it resolves itself.

frownyface · 08/05/2012 22:45

catclarks, I am worried that the lesions have interrupted the signal between my brain and my eye which im sure is utter rubbish but now iv thought it I cant unthink it if you see what I mean!

I did the peripheral vision test thing and it was fine, to be honest its not causing me a huge amount of difficulty with my sight as the right eye seems to have taken up the slack its just quite disconcerting really.I do have cracking headaches but that could be down to my long term paracetemal habit ( I suffer from chronic pain)

Will be interesting to see what the specialist has to say!

OP posts:
catclarks · 08/05/2012 22:51

I'm no expert, but I wouldn't have thought the signals between the brain and your eye will be interrupted. I'm sure your brain is racing at the moment with all the possibilities. A glass of wine might help with that one Grin

frownyface · 08/05/2012 22:57

GrinI have a small glass and I feel better for talking about it and so im off to bed as I reckon DS will be up at the crack of dawn

not at all frowny! I am already using My Eye as an excuse for everything.

frownyface · 09/05/2012 07:15

Im in berkshire, we have an eye hospital in Windsor which is where I went yesturday. The triage nurse didnt seem overly concerned, I am hoping the specialist will have some answers tomo, if not I will call the hospital in Moorfields for a second opinion.

If you compare it to your situation it doesnt seem very good does it, I was really hoping to be passed on to see a doctor yesturday. Feeling a bit annoyed about the lack of urgency.

Thanks for the information, all the waiting is driving me crazy.

Thinking of you Frownyface, and fingers crossed your appointment goes well.

Madsometimes · 10/05/2012 11:00

Good luck Frownyface. I'm crossing my fingers that today you will be nearer knowing what is happening to your eyes, even if that involves more tests and appointments.

catclarks · 10/05/2012 22:02

Hope you got on ok today Frowny.
