Hi all dh had endoscopy last week and was told he had a hernia and a dudenal ulcer. They tested it and took biopsy and said its not caused by the h.pylori bacteria which causes 90% of them. He hasn't taken anti-inflammatorys either so not caused by that.
what other causes of ulcers are there?? He's just been told to take medication but he told me tonight he's going back to see doc about it which is unusual for him as he hates doctors!

Sometimes they get blamed on anti inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, nurofen, asprin, anadin, diclofenac.

They reduce the mucous layer that protects your stomach from digesting itself but duodenal is the small bowel.

Or am I totally wrong?

Hi all, I had ulcers years ago and they were caused by H Pylori, so having had the successful treatment about 15 years ago I was surprised to be told I had a new ulcer and it wasn't due to H pylori. I am currently on lanszoprazole, assume DH is too - but this has been going on for months now so when I go back to GP 2 weeks time I am going to ask well - what now? Do I just live with the ulcer or can it be successfully treated? As I understand it, your GP or consultant should have told him that he will be re-examined with endoscope in x months time and given diet/lifestyle advice as well as tablets.

But as for what causes them other than H pylori, everything I have read confirms what Fluffy is saying - apparently they blame it all on the drugs she has mentioned. I have taken ibuprofen in the past but I don't think that's the cause, I think that some people are just genetically pre-disposed to stomach problems - my DDs are only 11 and 8 and they have the same symptoms already.

Good luck with that, hope he gets a clearer picture from GP.

Lots of those drugs, also minor injury. I took diclofenac for a few days, which worked as a painkiller but triggered d+v enough that I ended up in A+E, and result was 'you know what an ulcer is? Your stomach is one big one.'

Took a couple years to heal.

Thanks guys. He never ever takes pills do not sure what caused it unless he's just susceptible. I found something called zollinger Ellison that can cause ulcers as well. Dh going back to docs to find out
