Ouch!!

Ive woken up with my jaw locked today which was mildly annoying then but still there now and is now really painful - I also have a bit of ear ache.

Could it be an ear infection that is giving me pain in my jaw too?

I just cant undo my jaw - I can only open my mouth a little way then it is just stuck, painful and feels like it would snap if I opened it any further
Any ideas?

Has it always been clicky? I had that when I was younger and it was very painful and very hard to eat.

Umm.. I had to have a major operation to reset everything. Not what you want to hear, I'm sure. But if it's not all the time, I wouldn't worry about it. Mine was constant, interfering with day to day life.

If it feels tight maybe try taking some Nurofen. (Says she in what she means to be a reassuring way...)

Actually, my jaw is still a little clicky and gets stuck every so often. Time takes care of it, although you might get a big "snap" and a bit of pain, then it's fine.

Oh, right. It is worse if I've kept your mouth open in a certain position. (Seriously.)

I did used to get it when I was younger and have it every now and then but normally I can just rub the top of my jaw and it frees but nothing will help this one. I once went to dentist about it when I was v sick of it and he took mould for mouth guard thing but I dont think I went back for it ooopps - this time its worse and my ear hurts too

No, sorry, just trying to be helpful. A Nurofen might help. Wash it down with a massive glass of whisky if possible.

Its not as bad this morning but still very clicky and feels like my jaw is out of place - JJ thank you for your advice - Ill keep an eye on it (and not do any BJs for a while)

dd1 has found for a while now that she can't open her jaw very wide, and sometimes chewing food hurts. When she opens up too wide, (when laughing for example) a pain shoots through her jaw.

I took her to the docs, and he said this is a recognised condition, where the joint gets inflamed. You can see a specialist who will prescribe special exercises for it, or in a lot of cases it goes away on its own. We decided to wait and see. So far (after several weeks) it is getting better, very gradually.

I guess the other thing is stress, if you a clenching your jaw with tension, that could strain it. If that's what it is it should get better once you are relaxed again.

Hope you are feeling better and I will not join in with the teasing remarks, although I must admit they made me smile.

Ouch indeed, I've had that, Beccarollo. I was seeing a consultant without much luck but it cleared up competely when I bought an orthopaedic pillow for back/neck ache. I guess it must be to do with alignment or something?

my neice had a similar problem - she went to see a specialist - think its called maxofacial specialist - anyway something to do with the jaw and teeth - he said it may be related to the orthodontic work she had had done when she was younger or it could be linked to stress - he gave her some exercises to do - it did take a while but it has improved

Could you have dislocated it?

I also have this problem - due to grinding my teeth while asleep apparently. I used to have a mouth guard that the dentist made but lost it while moving house years ago, can't say it made much difference however it might be worth seeing your dentist anyway.

I cant believe I have a BJ related injury - I mentioned this to DP last night and he was having none of it, presumably encase I never do again - he said I wasnt doing it for long enough for it to cause it!

It could be TMJ (Temporomandibular joint disorder). It basically means your jaw can lock. Mine used to do this a lot and I had a bite plate made to wear at night.

Ok, just me, but sometimes I get a crick in my neck which goes away after a few days, and always precedes a bad cold. I'm convinced that for some reason the virus gets refuge from my immune system somewhere in the neck joint. AFter the little blighters have bred merrily away they erupt back into my system to make me feel awful, again. Not scientific, I haven't researched it, but I'm convinved that it's exactly what happens to me, and it does come on quite like your Lockjaw thing has, Beccarollo. You watch, I bet the jaw-ache will be gone & you'll have a stonking, slightly feverish cold within 4 days.
